"And," Annora added, "as long as she marries into the Montgomery family, the gap between her and Seren won't be so vast. Haven't you noticed? Carla has been pathologically competitive her whole life. I once overheard her complaining to someone that our family always favored Seren over her."

Nadine looked like she was about to roll her eyes out of her head. In the beginning, they hadn't favored anyone; Seren and Carla were both their cousins. The favoritism came later, after they realized Seren was a good person and Carla was not. A person with a bad character wouldn't be well-liked anywhere, unless they found their own kind to wallow with.

"You know," Nadine muttered, "in a way, Carla and the Montgomerys are perfect for each other. Her marrying Edwin is a good thing. Scum deserves scum. The two of them can be locked together for life, destroying each other, and leave the rest of us alone."

"True," Annora mused. "Edwin's mother is no walk in the park. Any woman who can successfully steal a man like that has to be cunning. I heard the Channing family was reluctant to let their daughter get engaged to Edwin in the first place. Any sane person knows marrying into that family is like jumping into a pit of fire. But alas, the Galloway heiress, Dagmar Channing, only has eyes for him."
