Swain was speechless. A sudden, dawning comprehension washed over him. It didn't matter what he gave her; she was never going to accept it. If she had wanted to, she would have found a reason to. But she didn't want his favor. She didn't want any connection to him at all.
It was only then that he truly understood: Seren was colder and more resolute than he had ever imagined. No matter what he did, no matter how much he repented, she would never look back. He finally understood what Old Mr. Rutledge had meant. He had believed he had a chance to make things right, but his grandfather had seen Seren's determination from the start.
"Do you think Seren wanted a birthday present?" Nadine's voice cut through his thoughts, sharp and unforgiving. "No. She wanted to feel valued by her family. She wanted thoughtfulness. And you never, ever gave her that."
"Think about it. In all these years, did you ever once remember her birthday? Did you ever give her a gift? No. All she could do was watch as you showered Carla with presents, celebrating Carla's birthday year after year. You knew all of Carla's favorite things, you gave her whatever she wanted. You were thoughtful and attentive to *her*. It's not that you're incapable of it; you just habitually denied it to Seren."
"You're not really trying to be good to Seren," Nadine concluded, her voice laced with contempt. "You're just trying to maintain your carefully crafted image of a noble, upstanding gentleman and ease your own guilt. So, you can save your phony remorse. A person like you doesn't deserve forgiveness."
Nadine had said the things Seren wouldn't. After all these years, she saw Swain for exactly what he was: a hypocrite, just like the rest of the Bradleys, hiding behind a facade of polished respectability.
