Seren was taken aback.
In the seventeen years she had lived with the Bradleys, from the day she returned until the day she left, Swain had never once given her a gift. And now, today of all days, he had one for her.
For a second, she thought maybe pigs had started flying.
Although she had no intention of accepting it, she remained silent, a flicker of curiosity getting the better of her. She wanted to see what he could have possibly gotten her.
Swain eagerly presented his gift. It was a white shopping bag with a prominent "LV" logo.
"Seren," he said, pulling out a small, delicate handbag, "this is the latest limited-edition bag from Louis Vuitton. I picked it out especially for you. Do you like it?"
Though he asked, his tone was confident. He was certain she would love it. After all, what woman didn't love designer bags? And besides, this was far more valuable than a bunch of stones and brushes.
Seren didn't take it. "I don't like it," she said coldly. A small, humorless smile touched her lips. To think she had actually held a sliver of hope for him.
Swain was stunned. "Why not?"
"I just don't. There's no reason," she replied flatly.
