What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 152

Kaia knew he was planning to give her the cold shoulder to let the issue fade.

She wasn't in a rush. He would have to face it sooner or later.

On Friday afternoon, Kaia received a call from the school. In that instant, her blood ran cold, and she nearly collapsed. Silas Sanders happened to be sitting next to her. Seeing her suddenly slump, he instinctively reached out to steady her. "What's wrong?"

"Something happened to Brynlee..." Kaia's voice was tight, her face draining of color.

"What happened?" A chill ran down Silas’s spine as he asked quickly.

"Brynlee was knocked over by another kid, and it triggered her hypoxic cyanosis. It's an emergency. Silas, take me to the hospital." Kaia grabbed his arm. "Drive for me."

"Okay, let's go." Silas nodded, and the two hurried out of the office.

Arriving at the hospital parking garage, Kaia practically sprinted to the elevator, with Silas right on her heels.

Outside the emergency room, they could see the medical staff rushing around through the window in the door.

A tiny figure lay on the bed, hooked up to various tubes and wires. The numbers flashing on the monitor made Kaia feel as though her heart had stopped.

Silas stood tensely beside her, taking in the scene. His heart clenched as well.

The Head Nurse hurried out and addressed Kaia. "Mr. Sanders, Mrs. Sanders, please try to stay calm. Director Kendrick is inside handling it. Her condition has stabilized."

Silas paused. The nurse had mistaken him for Finnian.

A few moments later, Dr. Miles Kendrick walked out. Seeing Kaia's panicked expression, he reassured her. "Kaia, Brynlee's heart rate is back to normal, and the cyanosis has subsided."

"There was no severe damage this time because she was brought in so quickly, but it's a stark reminder that her emotional management is critical. Any intense crying, sudden fright, or strenuous activity can be a trigger."

Miles's gaze lingered on Kaia's pale face for a second. "You might want to communicate with the school to establish stricter guidelines for Brynlee's environment."

Kaia nodded, finally managing to calm down. she pressed her fingers against her temples, her loose strands of hair making her look disheveled and frantic.

"Okay, I understand. Thank you, Miles, for saving her. Can I go in and see her now?" Kaia asked, her voice hoarse as she fought to keep her emotions in check.

"You can go in, but she's been given a sedative. She's asleep."

Kaia nodded, took a deep breath, and pushed the door open. Silas tried to follow, but Miles held up a hand to stop him.

Finnian's expression darkened even further. He nodded. "I know."

With that, he got up and left the office. Walking down the hospital corridor, his heart beat a little faster.

Inside the room, Kaia was still leaning forward, sitting by the bed. She was holding the little hand with the IV, her head bowed, her shoulders shaking slightly.

She was crying.

Finnian stopped in his tracks. He didn't go in. Instead, he went to The Smoking Area down the hall and lit a cigarette.

No matter how strong, capable, and independent Kaia usually was, she was just a helpless mother right now. Faced with her sick child, she was terrified and vulnerable.

Finnian finished his cigarette and returned to the room. Seeing him enter, Kaia grabbed a tissue, wiped her tears, and retreated behind her usual cool facade.

Finnian sat on the other side of the bed, wrapping his large, warm hand around his daughter's free hand.

Perhaps it was the added warmth, but Brynlee, who hadn't been sleeping peacefully, suddenly opened her eyes.
