What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 153

Seeing both her mom and dad by her side, she immediately sat up. Then, catching sight of the IV needle in her left hand, her little mouth crumpled, and she burst into loud sobs, desperately wanting her mother's embrace.

Kaia held her carefully, reminding her not to move her hand with the needle. Tears spilled from Kaia's own red eyes.

"Mommy, I'm so scared..." Brynlee sobbed, voicing her terror.

"Don't be scared. Mommy's here."

Watching the mother and daughter cry together, Finnian felt a heavy, suffocating ache in his chest.

"Be a good girl, sweetie. Miles said you can't cry too hard. Please stop crying, okay? Tell Mommy, are you hungry? I'll go buy you something delicious." Kaia coaxed her daughter in a low, soothing voice. At this moment, nothing else mattered. She just wanted her child to be healthy and safe.

Brynlee slowly began to calm down. After a few soft sniffles, she turned her head and saw her dad was there too. She immediately crawled over to the edge of the bed and threw herself into Finnian's arms.

"Daddy, weren't you on a business trip? Why are you back?" Brynlee asked, her little lip pouting.

Finnian grabbed a tissue and gently wiped away her tears, his voice hoarse. "Daddy heard you were in the hospital and rushed right back."

"Daddy, am I... going to die?" With that, Brynlee lost control again, shaking with fear.

Her words hit both parents like a physical blow, draining the color from their faces.

"No, sweetheart. You're going to get better," Finnian said softly, suppressing his own grief.

Kaia couldn't bear to hear another word. She stood up. "Brynlee, Mommy is going downstairs to get you some food."

"Okay, Mommy. Can I have some candy? I want something sweet," Brynlee whispered.

"Okay!" Kaia nodded. Just as she reached the door, Miles walked in. Finnian had pressed the call button earlier.

"She's awake?" Miles looked relieved. He then glanced at Kaia's red-rimmed eyes, a flash of sympathy in his gaze, and said softly, "Don't worry, she's going to be fine."

Kaia looked at him, her eyes brimming with worry. "Okay!"

Out in the hallway, Kaia received a call from the school. The parents of the child who knocked Brynlee down had rushed to the school and were anxious to visit the hospital to apologize.

Kaia had already seen the security footage sent by the school. The other child had simply been running too fast and hadn't noticed Brynlee, knocking her over. The pain caused Brynlee to cry intensely, which triggered shortness of breath, fainting, and her lips turning blue. The teacher had immediately rushed her to the hospital—the best possible response.

Kaia told them to hold off on visiting for now and that they would handle the situation at the school once Brynlee's condition stabilized.

Down in the lobby, Elaine Sanders rushed in, accompanied by Grandma Josephine.

"Kaia..." A tall figure approached her. It was Silas. He hadn't left.

"Why are you still here?" Kaia asked, surprised.

"I stayed in case you needed help," Silas said softly.

"Finnian rushed back, so everything is under control. You should head back to the office." Kaia gave him a grateful look.

"Is Brynlee awake?" Silas asked.

"Yes. She was asking for candy, so I'm going to the convenience store across the street," Kaia explained quietly.

"I'll walk with you." Silas's gaze lingered on her face for a moment. She looked terrified and exhausted.

"Alright." Kaia didn't reject his kindness.

They picked up a few things at the store, and when they walked out, they saw Silas's assistant carrying several takeout bags. Kaia paused.

Silas took the bags and handed them to Kaia. "I had my assistant pick up some food. I was going to bring it up to you, but here. You should eat."
