What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 214

"Leo, do you even hear yourself right now? Would you dare say that to Sophia's face?" Kaia stared at him, profoundly disappointed by his twisted logic.

All the color drained from Leo's face, the words dying in his throat.

"It's easy to preach when you're not the one bleeding. Do you honestly think I want a divorce out of spite? No. I believe that once a person shreds the basic vows of their marriage, the relationship is dead. There's nothing left to save. I just want a clean break." Kaia crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair, a deep sadness settling over her features. "Leo, knowing everything you do... do you really expect me to just swallow my pride and suffer in silence?"

Leo was struck speechless. He opened his mouth, trying to cobble together an argument, but seeing the agonizing clarity in his sister's eyes, the words failed him completely.

"We didn't marry for love to begin with. I know life isn't a romance novel. I know that. I just... I can't accept that the woman he wants is Noelle. I refuse to let my marriage be used as a convenient cover for their twisted little affair, parading around like a happy family while they stab me in the back. I won't do it." Tears slipped down Kaia's cheeks as she spoke. She grabbed a napkin, wiping her eyes as she took a shuddering breath. "I know he's powerful. I know he can throw lucrative deals at everyone around me. But I am not going to let my marriage be collateral damage for someone else's paycheck. Leo, don't worry. I'll help you find new business opportunities. Just... promise me you won't go begging him for scraps ever again. Please?"

"Kaia..." Leo's voice dropped to a shameful whisper. "I'm sorry. This is all my fault for not being successful enough on my own, for putting you in this position. I'll work harder. I'll try not to burden you so much."

"Okay." Kaia gathered her composure and looked at him steadily. "If this marriage was actually making me happy, I wouldn't be walking away from it so easily."

Leo hesitated, then nodded. "I know. Honestly, it breaks my heart to see you like this. But a divorce is going to be incredibly hard on you and Brynlee. Being a single mom is no walk in the park. Besides, you're young, you have your whole life ahead of you—"

"Leo, the only thing that matters right now is Brynlee," Kaia said with a bitter smile. "She is the only reason I've endured it this long. But once her surgery is out of the way, I'm filing the papers. I refuse to waste my life suffocating in a toxic marriage. And I know Brynlee doesn't need to grow up in a home built on lies. One day, she'll understand. And I'm more than capable of providing a wonderful life for her on my own."

Leo looked at her and let out a heavy sigh. He knew it now—Kaia was dead serious. There was no changing her mind.

"Have you talked to Finnian? What did he say?" Leo asked, genuine concern finally breaking through.

"I have. But he's using Brynlee as an excuse to block the divorce for now."

Leo blinked, throwing out a bold theory. "Is it possible that he actually cares about you? That he just doesn't want to lose you?"

"Leo." Kaia looked at him dead in the eye. "Do you honestly believe a man who is emotionally invested in another woman gives a damn about his wife's feelings?"

The words landed like a physical slap across Leo's face. He was completely silenced.
