Kaia stared at the screen, surprised that the man had actually played along. She showed the phone to Brynlee. "Your dad replied. Can you go to sleep now?"

"Are you sure you guys aren't fighting? I still think you're both acting weird, like you don't want to talk to each other." Brynlee blinked, firmly believing her own intuition.

"Alright, stop overthinking it. If you don't get enough sleep, you won't grow tall," Kaia coaxed gently.

Brynlee finally relaxed, drifting off to sleep under her mother's soothing touch.

On the morning of May 3rd, Finnian happened to return from his business trip. Around noon, Kaia received a text from him: "The Imperial Chef, seven o'clock. Let's have dinner."

Kaia frowned. "I'm busy."

Finnian's next message came through: "Brynlee knows today is our anniversary. When I took her to school the other morning, she brought it up. I told her we would be having dinner together tonight."

Kaia paused. Finnian was actually bringing this up? How childish of him.

"Understood," Kaia finally agreed.

Finnian sent another text: "Could you prepare a gift for me? I will have one prepared as well."

Kaia truly felt he was asking for too much, but she knew he was only doing it to keep their daughter from getting suspicious.

"Fine," she replied.

At ten minutes to seven, Kaia arrived promptly at the entrance of The Imperial Chef. Finnian had picked Brynlee up earlier, and the father and daughter were already sitting in a booth in the main dining room. They were chatting about something, and the little girl looked thrilled.

Kaia gripped the handle of her gift bag and walked briskly toward them.

"Mom's here!" Brynlee's sharp eyes spotted Kaia instantly. She ran over happily and hugged her. "Mom, Dad and I have been waiting for you for so long!"

"I'm sorry, traffic was a bit heavy," Kaia said warmly.

As she approached, Kaia saw Finnian leaning lazily back in his chair. He was wearing a dark gray dress shirt, looking effortlessly relaxed.

Brynlee had specifically changed into a pretty little dress for the occasion, her hair tied in a ponytail and decorated with two small hair clips.

"You made it." Finnian looked up, his tone gentle and laced with a smile. "Brynlee and I have already studied the menu and decided what to eat. Do you want to add a couple of dishes?"
