Martin Rhodes looked stunned, offering an awkward smile. "Mr. Sanders, is this Ms. Lawrence's intention?"
"No, it's mine." Finnian Sanders was half a head taller, looming over him. "The man Noelle is looking for must have a clean background and impeccable character."
Martin flushed, immediately trying to explain. "Mr. Sanders, I think there might be a misunderstanding..."
"There is no misunderstanding," Finnian cut him off bluntly. "It wasn't hard to look into your promiscuous past. You aren't suitable for her, and she won't marry you. You can be friends, but marriage is off the table."
Martin stood frozen. He had finally met a woman he was crazy about, only to have her brother ruthlessly shatter his dreams.
"Mr. Sanders, Noelle and I get along great. I'm not sure why you don't approve of me, but I believe she wouldn't reject me so outright. I'm holding out hope. Besides, Josephine is quite satisfied with me." He kept a polite smile, not daring to offend Finnian.
"Is she?" Finnian's gaze was indifferent. "My grandmother's approval doesn't mean mine. She is my sister, and I won't let her marry a man with a dirty past. You're practically a playboy, Mr. Rhodes. If you want to settle down, find someone else. Don't ruin Noelle's life."
With that, Finnian turned and walked away.
Martin froze, feeling his polite mask violently torn away to reveal a twisted resentment. "Finnian Sanders, isn't your real reason for stopping this just as shameful?" Martin scoffed.
Finnian walked into the billiards room. Chad and Quentin were playing. Seeing Finnian's terrible mood, they raised their eyebrows at each other.
"What's wrong? Did Martin Rhodes owe you money? Why the dark cloud?" Quentin asked with a laugh, taking a shot.
"My grandmother arranged a courtship between him and Noelle," Finnian said flatly.
"Oh!" They looked intrigued. That explained everything.
Finnian ignored their gossipy expressions. "I don't approve. Martin is far from an ideal candidate."
Quentin, whose family was close to the Rhodes, nodded. "Yeah, he really isn't a good fit. The guy is fine for a fling, but marriage to him would be a total nightmare."
