Kaia emerged from the bathroom dressed in a fitted pair of jeans and a bright blue silk blouse. Her hair was pulled back casually with a clip, giving her an effortless, sophisticated look.

Finnian noticed she wasn't wearing much jewelry. Back at the mansion, she had a massive collection of expensive pieces, but she usually stuck to a delicate necklace from their engagement and her wedding band. "Yay! I want to go see Anna! Mom, take me to see Anna!" Brynlee bounced on the bed with excitement.

Finnian's face tightened in disbelief. He looked from his cheering daughter to Kaia's back. "You aren't seriously taking her to..."

Kaia turned around, her gaze icy. "Why? Do you have a problem with that?"

Finnian opened his mouth but found himself entirely speechless.

"Dad, aren't you coming with us?" Brynlee threw her arms around his neck, pouting. "I want you to come too."

Forcing a smile, Finnian tapped her nose affectionately. "Well, if Dad has time..."

"Brynlee, come here. Time for breakfast." Kaia walked over and seamlessly lifted the girl out of his arms.

Brynlee didn't even hear the rest of his excuse.

Finnian tried to brush off Kaia's cold demeanor. They had never exactly been a fiery, passionate couple, so he tried to convince himself he didn't know what he was missing.

After breakfast, Kaia left Brynlee with Layla and drove straight to Veridian Future.

When Silas saw her walk through the doors, he let out a visible sigh of relief.
