Noelle stepped into the soft ambient glow of the balcony lights. The night breeze caught the fabric of her elegant dress, highlighting her stunning curves. She looked ethereal, like a siren trying to pull him under.
She walked slowly until she was standing right in front of him.
Finnian stared at her. It was an undeniably beautiful scene, yet he suddenly realized the truth: the magnetic pull he used to feel whenever she looked at him was completely gone.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" Noelle asked, a demure smile playing on her lips as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Do you remember when we were in middle school and you told me I was ugly? I told you the ugly duckling would turn into a swan one day, and you just laughed at me."
"I remember," Finnian replied, a faint smile touching his lips.
"So, did I become the swan you imagined?" Noelle tilted her head up, clasping her hands behind her back in a coquettish display of vulnerability. Her bright eyes locked onto his. "Or do you still think I'm not pretty enough?"
Finnian hesitated. For some reason, this entire conversation suddenly felt incredibly forced and uncomfortable.
He let out a dry laugh. "I only said that to mess with you back then. You're very beautiful."
"Really?" Noelle beamed, thrilled to hear him admit it so sincerely. Riding the high of his compliment, she pushed her luck. "Then tell me... in your eyes, who is prettier and more feminine? Me or Kaia?"
Finnian's expression froze. He quickly masked it with a neutral smile. "You can't compare the two. You have your own kind of beauty, and she has hers."
