"Huh?"
"Did I hear that right?"
"You're actually willing to let her go?"
"Did the sun rise in the west? Quentin, quick, slap me."
Quentin didn't hesitate to deliver a stinging slap. Chad clutched his cheek, glaring furiously. "You actually hit me!"
"Did it hurt?" Quentin asked smugly.
"Hurt like hell! If this handsome face gets ruined, you're paying for my plastic surgery."
"Sorry, I'm completely straight. I don't swing that way."
Finnian Sanders watched the two idiots make a fool of themselves. He was used to their antics. Once they finished messing around, he finally asked seriously, "So? What do you guys think?"
"Hold on, there's absolutely no need to ask us. Anyone with eyes can see that Julian likes Noelle. But didn't you like her too? You're literally getting a divorce over her, so why the sudden... change of heart?"
Chad clapped his hands and jumped up. "I get it! Finnian, you just can't bear to divorce Dr. Chavez, can you? You love her and didn't even realize it! You're screwed, man. You've fallen in love all over again."
"Get serious." Finnian looked like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on, his expression darkening. "Which eye of yours saw me having feelings for Noelle? I've always just looked after her as a sister."
"What kind of brother takes care of a sister like that? Besides, you two aren't blood-related. You grew up together, and we've all watched you pamper and protect her like she's your most prized possession. You expect us to believe you don't have feelings for her?" Chad smirked, making it clear he wasn't buying it.
Finnian took a sip of his drink and let out a self-deprecating chuckle. "Maybe when I was younger, I had some unrealistic fantasies. But today, I realized something else. She shouldn't be strung along by something that has no future. I know perfectly well that nothing will ever happen between us. She'll only ever be a sister to me. That's how it was, and that's how it will stay."
"Finnian, you're just lying to yourself. When she gets together with someone else, don't go getting drunk and acting like a man who lost the love of his life. We won't play along. Anyway, I think Dr. Chavez is beautiful, brilliant, and incredibly rare. The two of you are perfectly matched in both looks and capability. By the way, can I risk my life to ask... if you and Dr. Chavez actually do get divorced, and I try to pursue her... will you kill me?" Chad was practically dancing on the edge of a cliff.
Finnian shot him a glare so icy it could have frozen him in place.
Quentin reached over and threw an arm around Chad's shoulders. "Buddy, you've got guts, dreaming about Dr. Chavez like that. Careful, or Finnian might actually end you."
