What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 369

Kaia didn't say a word, which was answer enough.

Finnian let out a humorless laugh. He didn't think he was all that terrible.

"Look, let's just stop fighting, okay?" he said, lowering his voice in a bid for peace.

"Finnian, I want to hear about your history with Noelle. Can we talk about that for a minute?" Kaia had finally mustered the courage to confront the demon head-on. She needed to rip the bandage off, no matter how much it hurt.

"I don't want to talk about it." An irritable edge sharpened his tone. "We grew up together, like any brother and sister. There's nothing to tell. Why do you constantly insist on dragging Noelle into our issues? Doesn't an older brother look out for his younger sister? You have a brother..."

"Ever since Leo got married, I haven't contacted him unless it's an absolute emergency. I don't intrude on his marriage. My brother and I are nothing like you two," Kaia mocked coldly, sick and tired of his excuses.

Finnian nodded defensively. "Fine. But you and Noelle come from very different backgrounds. Her parents died when she was little. She has deep abandonment issues and requires a little more support than the average person. It's completely normal."

"She's a grown woman now. Has she never heard of basic boundaries?" Kaia shot back seamlessly.

A crease formed between Finnian's brows. "Lots of adults struggle with insecurity. But because they're expected to just deal with it, it often spirals into anxiety or depression. Noelle... she suffered from severe depression in high school. She was medicated for a long time."

"If she's sick, she should see a therapist. Since when are you a licensed psychiatrist?" Every single counterargument Kaia threw at him was a kill shot.

"Family can be a form of therapy, too. You're just twisting my words." Finnian sucked in a sharp breath. The man who habitually dominated high-stakes corporate negotiations suddenly found himself on the ropes, sweating. It was the first time he'd ever realized Kaia possessed a lethal talent for debate.

"Am I twisting your words, or are you just too much of a coward to admit the truth?" Kaia scoffed. "If you're feeling guilty, don't worry, I won't judge you. Everyone has their own sick preferences. You can give your heart to whoever you want. I literally do not care."

That struck a nerve. A flash of pure irritation flared across his features. "Right, of course you don't care. Because your heart isn't with me, either."

Kaia held his gaze unflinchingly. "Exactly."
