What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 405

Kaia's eyes narrowed.

Noelle continued, her voice trembling and hoarse. "I'm all alone in the hospital room. I just woke up from a terrifying nightmare... I dreamed I lost the baby... I..."

Kaia had heard enough. "He's in the shower. Do you want me to bring the phone to him?"

Dead silence on the other end. It was as if Noelle had stopped breathing. Then, her tone shifted, suddenly perfectly composed and apologetic. "Kaia, I'm so sorry to bother you. If Finnian is showering, please don't disturb him. I'll call him back later."

Kaia hung up and tossed the phone back onto the nightstand.

Finnian usually showered in ten minutes, but this time, he had been in there for nearly half an hour. Kaia glanced at the door, half wondering if he had passed out.

Just as she was about to check, the door opened. He stepped out, looking slightly uncomfortable, without any steam billowing behind him—he must have taken a cold shower. He avoided her gaze.

"Your phone rang. It was Noelle. She was disturbing my work, so I answered it." Kaia saw no reason to hide it.

He looked surprised but remained calm. "Did she need something?"

Kaia stared at his composed face. "She said her stomach hurt. She also mentioned a nightmare about losing the baby."

He froze mid-step toward the couch, snapping his head around to look at her.

Kaia stood by the bed, arms crossed, her expression arctic.

The air in the room seemed to freeze. He finally spoke. "I was planning to tell you. Noelle... is pregnant."

Kaia scoffed. "Is she? As the father, shouldn't you be glued to her side, playing nurse?"

"What father?" He looked thoroughly insulted.
