Seeing that he still had the nerve to argue, Kaia slowly looked up and met his eyes.
The moonlight caught her face; there was no anger, only utter, chilling calmness.
"Finnian, what more is there to say? Every single thing you've done for her—is that how a brother acts?" She scoffed, her soft tone piercing him like needles. "Tell me, have you ever done any of those things for me? I am your wife, yet all your tenderness and concern go to your 'sister'. In your eyes, is that not a betrayal? What do you call it?"
Exhaustion suddenly washed over him. He sank onto the couch, his face draining of color. "My feelings for her... I just..."
He tried to find the right words to justify his actions, but under her sharp, clear gaze, all his excuses felt hollow.
Looking back since Rafael's death, every favor he did for Noelle could technically be rationalized. Yet, strung together, the picture wasn't entirely innocent.
Seeing him struggle, Kaia knew her point had landed.
"You know exactly how you feel about her. You care for her, you ache for her, you want to protect her—because she's in your heart. Finnian, I don't need a confession, and you don't need to explain. Love is a two-way street. For Brynlee's sake, let's just end this peacefully." She was so tired. She had turned a blind eye for so long, enduring it all just to finally get a clean break and a quiet life with her daughter.
He jolted, staring at her, swallowing hard.
He wanted to say that his feelings for Noelle were purely familial, that he never intended to cross any lines.
His lips pressed into a thin line, and he leaned his head back, pinching the bridge of his nose. He hadn't crossed the ultimate line, but he hadn't maintained a safe distance either. He had blurred the boundaries.
Those ambiguous, unspoken ties were like a spider's web—invisible, yet suffocatingly tight.
His phone buzzed again.
It was a text from Noelle. Just three words: Kaia knows everything.
Seeing him freeze, Kaia forced a smile. "Call her back. Don't let her worry. Pregnancy and stress don't mix."
His mind was a mess. He grabbed his phone and walked to the door. Pausing, he looked back. "Kaia, she and I really..."
"There's no need," she cut him off coldly. "It's none of my business."
He frowned, stepped out into the hallway, and shut the door.
It was dead quiet. He didn't dial Noelle immediately. Leaning against the wall, he closed his eyes, her accusations echoing in his head.
