What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 494

"I never stopped wanting you and Mom. It's Mom who doesn't want to be with me anymore," Finnian decided to have a proper talk with his daughter. He couldn't let her think he didn't love her.

"Why wouldn't Mom want to be with you? Isn't it because you did a bad job?" Brynlee's little mind worked fast.

Her words left him speechless. An awkward look crossed his handsome face. "Yes, I did some things wrong. I made mistakes. It's only right that your mom blames me."

"Then why are you even asking? Just admit you were wrong. Mom is very reasonable. But it really looks like she doesn't want you anymore. I haven't seen her talk to you lately." Brynlee sighed heavily, sounding like a tiny adult. "What are we going to do? Mom must be really sad, too."

"Would she be sad?" Finnian doubted it.

"Of course! She used to love you so much, but you didn't love her back as much. Of course she'd be sad," she stated earnestly.

"She loved me?" Finnian felt like he had just heard a ridiculous joke. "You're too young, you don't understand."

"I do too! When I was in preschool, Mom taught me how to write your name. She said she used to practice writing it stroke by stroke, too," Brynlee argued with solid proof.

"Oh?" A jolt of electricity seemed to shoot through his chest. Did that really happen? Why had he known nothing about it?

"Dad, can't you just be someone Mom likes? What exactly did you do wrong?" Deep down, Brynlee didn't want them to split up. She loved them both.

"I... you're too little to understand right now. I'll explain it to you when you're older," Finnian deflected, feeling an inexplicable heat rise to his face.

"I don't need your explanation. Just explain it to Mom!" Her little brain couldn't process complicated adult relationships.

"Yeah, I will." He let out a soft sigh.

Noelle had been lying in the hospital for ten days. The floral tributes on her bedside table had been changed out five times, and as the days wore on, her visitors dwindled.

She kept tabs on the situation at Aethelstan. Dr. Gordon Hayes was temporarily filling her position. Hearing his name brought her a wave of relief; he was firmly on her side.

Gordon was making his third visit to the hospital. Bringing a fruit basket and a bouquet of flowers, he knocked on the door. Martha answered and smiled. "Dr. Hayes is here."

When he walked in, Noelle was having some soup. She set her bowl down. "Martha, go downstairs and buy me a pack of tissues."

Martha took the hint and left.

"Come in, don't stand at the door," Noelle said.
