"Who I hang out with is none of your business! At least I'm not out here being a homewrecker and getting knocked up. You're repulsive." Chloe was entirely convinced that the baby Noelle was carrying belonged to Finnian. A widowed sister-in-law pregnant with her brother-in-law's child? In the old days, she'd be drowned in a pig basket for that.
"Are you quite finished?" Noelle's face darkened, her eyes glaring viciously at Chloe.
"If you have the guts to do it, you should have the guts to let people talk about it. What's your problem?" Seeing her mother frantically winking at her to stop, Chloe just tilted her chin up, huffed, and stomped back upstairs.
Pearl rushed over to smooth things over. "Noelle, your sister and her friends have been practicing dance lately. They're planning to open a dance studio for adults, they aren't just fooling around."
"Mom, do you even know what kind of women take adult dance classes? You should really look into it. It's just a bunch of cheap bimbos," Noelle said, her arms crossed and her tone dripping with contempt.
Pearl was speechless.
Noelle suddenly stood up and grabbed her bag. "Forget it, I'm not eating breakfast here. I'll grab something on the way."
With that, she walked out and drove off in her Bentley.
She headed to a breakfast spot she used to frequent with Finnian and Rafael. It was quite busy at this hour. The owner recognized her when she walked in. Noelle sat in her usual spot, tasting the familiar food, but her heart felt completely hollow.
A sweeping sense of loneliness washed over her, making her feel as though the entire world had abandoned and forgotten her.
She barely took a few bites before leaving.
The Aethelstan Tower looked the same as always, its glass exterior gleaming coldly in the morning light.
When she pulled into the underground garage, she found an SUV parked in her reserved spot. Her face darkened as she was forced to park in a neighboring space.
She smoothed her hair and checked her makeup in the mirror before taking the elevator up.
