"Is it good, Mom?" Brynlee didn't notice how aggressively her mother had bitten into it; she just asked excitedly.
"Mm-hmm, it's delicious," Kaia smiled and nodded.
Brynlee took a piece to try as well. "It really is so yummy! I'm going to pack these up and take them home for Dad to try."
Watching her daughter talk about her dad every other sentence, Kaia couldn't quite describe the mix of emotions she felt. It was a crippling sense of helplessness—just when she wanted to cut ties completely, she was violently reminded of the unbreakable bond they shared through their child.
On Friday, Kaia received a call from her uncle, Marcus, saying he was coming over at noon to file some paperwork and wanted to grab lunch. He even asked if Finnian could join them so he could express his gratitude.
When Kaia arrived at the restaurant, Marcus was already there. On the table next to him sat a box of famous traditional pastries and two beautifully packaged boxes of premium tea.
"Kaia!" Marcus looked at her, then peered behind her...
"He didn't have time," Kaia explained.
Marcus chuckled. "Understandable, totally understandable. He's a busy man. Come sit down, I already ordered."
Kaia took her seat. As she held her teacup, she heard Marcus let out a huge sigh of relief. "The contract with Aethelstan was finalized yesterday afternoon. The first installment will hit the account before next Friday."
A massive weight lifted off Kaia's chest. Knowing Finnian, she figured he wouldn't let the project stall for long.
"That's great news, Uncle. From here on out, you'll probably need to put all your energy into this project," Kaia gently advised.
"I know," Marcus said, looking at the quiet woman across from him. "I learned my lesson the hard way. I definitely won't be putting all my eggs in one basket again."
The two chatted over lunch about the next steps for rolling out the flagship facility, with Kaia offering plenty of strategic advice.
The next morning, Saturday, Kaia got a call from Silas. He mentioned that a client had suddenly been hospitalized and asked if she could go with him to pay a visit.
As the head of R&D for Veridian Future, this was a request she couldn't refuse.
