"Stand right here, Kaia," Silas said, reaching out to gently pull her toward him. Kaia's back pressed into the corner of the elevator while Silas's tall, broad frame stepped right in front of her, effectively shielding her from the crushing crowd.
Kaia leaned back quietly. Every time she breathed, she couldn't help but catch the cool, distinct scent radiating from his chest—a mix of sandalwood and ambergris, a fragrance entirely unique to a young, masculine man.
Kaia held her breath slightly and lowered her eyes.
Above her, Silas stood like a solid wall, granting her a moment of fleeting peace.
He was also looking down, his gaze naturally falling upon her face.
Standing next to them, lugging a massive fruit basket and two giant bags of nutritional supplements, Franklin was sweating bullets. He took one look at his handsome boss and wisely fixed his eyes on the ascending floor numbers.
Finally, they reached the nineteenth floor.
The crowd thinned out, and Silas sauntered lazily out of the elevator.
Kaia instinctively tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, the stifling feeling in her chest easing up a bit.
The client was in his fifties. The second Silas walked in, he turned on the charm, sweet-talking the older man until his face broke into an affectionate, grandfatherly smile, insisting that his son take them out for lunch.
Silas politely deferred a few times, then turned to Kaia. "Are you free for lunch? If you don't have anything going on, we can grab a bite and talk about the next steps for our partnership."
Since he put it like that, Kaia practically had to say yes.
"You're too kind, Mr. Peterson. Let's get lunch, then," Kaia agreed with a professional smile.
The group left the inpatient ward and headed for the elevators in the administrative building.
Mr. Peterson's son needed to stop on the second floor to speak with a doctor, so Silas and Kaia got off there as well.
The second floor was a maze of intersecting corridors. As they stood near the entrance to a skybridge, two incredibly familiar figures unexpectedly stepped into their line of sight.
It was Finnian and Noelle.
