Kaia paused, looking at the smiling, handsome face in front of her with complex emotions. "How long?"
Silas shrugged. "Oh, just about eight or nine years before you did."
Kaia stared at him.
Silas's smile gradually cooled. "I picked up on a few things because of my sister."
Kaia felt some of her confusion clear up. Silas had a sister who, years ago, had been institutionalized for psychiatric treatment. Once she recovered, she was sent to live abroad. She had recently gotten married but had suffered a relapse and was still undergoing treatment.
Kaia knew better than to pry. This was Silas's off-limits territory—his deepest wound.
The two of them stood behind a pillar, waiting. Shortly after, Franklin darted back, weaving between obstacles like a thief in the night, panting as he stopped in front of them. "Got 'em. Mr. Sanders and Ms. Lawrence have an appointment with a specialist. Apparently, the doctor is a legend in obstetrics."
Suppressing her surging emotions, Kaia said gratefully, "Thank you, Franklin. Please send all the photos to me."
Catching his breath, Franklin nodded. "Will do, Dr. Chavez."
Silas cast a concerned look at Kaia. "Are you holding up okay, Kaia?"
Kaia looked up toward the OB/GYN wing, a trace of disorientation in her eyes.
"Let's go. We have lunch to get to," Kaia said, abruptly dropping the subject. She straightened her posture and led the way out.
Silas watched her resolute stride in silence for a few seconds before stepping out to follow her.
After finishing lunch with the client and stepping out of the restaurant, a light drizzle had begun to fall.
Standing under the restaurant awning, Kaia watched a video her mother had sent. Brynlee was happily playing with her father's pet parrot, looking absolutely thrilled.
Jane sent a follow-up text: 'Let Brynlee stay and play here for the afternoon. I'll put her down for a nap. You go hang out with your friends.'
Kaia knew her mother had sensed she was in a bad headspace lately and was trying to give her some room to breathe.
