Was Kaia really in such a rush to remarry?
Was it because, throughout their marriage, she had never received an ounce of attention or care? Her heart was entirely hollow. They always said people starved of love were the easiest to lure away with a single piece of candy.
A sharp pang of suffocating pain slashed across Finnian's heart.
He slammed his phone face down on the leather seat, unable to bear looking at those warm, romantic photos for a second longer.
The night outside the window was as dark as ink, and the passing scenery felt like it was mocking him.
After he had rejected her movie invitation that day, Kaia had never once brought it up again. Thinking back carefully, her eyes had been brimming with expectation, nervousness, and vulnerability. She had looked exactly like a shy girl standing in front of the man she desperately loved.
Finnian leaned back against the seat and closed his eyes.
Was he only waking up to the truth now?
He thought back to when they had just gotten married. Her eyes had been full of light, shining brightly whenever she smiled, overflowing with hope for the new home they were building together.
But somewhere along the line, the light in her eyes had died out completely. It probably happened during every casual rejection, every time he failed to show up. But he had never paid enough attention. She had been performing a one-woman show in their marriage the entire time.
Finnian sat in heavy silence for a long time before he couldn't resist picking up his phone and opening the photo again.
The way Simon looked down at her as they spoke was entirely focused and incredibly tender. It was as if she were the most breathtaking view in his world.
Perhaps this was what love was actually supposed to look like—not a string of cold, dismissive rejections.
Finnian stared at the photo for a long time, a complex, unnamable feeling swirling in his chest. As he slowly dissected it, he realized it tasted exactly like regret.
"Don't head back to the villa. Go to The Veridian Residences," Finnian ordered Dexter.
Dexter assumed his boss just missed his daughter, so he immediately changed direction, hopped onto the overpass, and sped toward the apartment complex.
The car parked in a spot directly across the street. Dexter glanced back at Finnian.
Finnian made no move to get out. Instead, he rolled down the window and stared blankly at the lights glowing from the apartment upstairs.
"Go find somewhere to sit outside. I don't want you breathing in secondhand smoke," Finnian told him.
Dexter nodded and stepped back out into the cold, wrapping his arms tightly around himself as he glanced up at the illuminated apartment window.
His boss had been sitting in the car for an hour and a half now. Why wasn't he going upstairs?
Wasn't he here to see his kid? The kid was right up there.
Dexter stood shivering in the biting wind for another agonizing thirty minutes.
Finally, the clock hit 10:30 PM.
A sleek black Maybach rolled slowly down the street and parked directly opposite them. Finnian's vacant gaze snapped back into sharp focus.
Dexter, still freezing in the wind, scrambled back into the driver's seat. "Isn't that Mr. Quinn's car?"
Just then, Kaia stepped out of the passenger side. She was holding her bag, leaning over to say something with a smile through the open door. Simon got out of the car, walked around to the front, and handed her a small box.

The readers' comments on the novel: What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage
Finnian is finally awake to Noelle’s schemes! I hope he cuts the cord completely and brutally. He needs to truly repent and suffer the consequences for all the pain he caused Kaia and his blatant favoritism toward Noelle. Only then should there be even a slight hope of Kaia softening her heart....
Why does this book take so long to update, instead of 5 chapters mentioned above, we are getting about one chapter a day on average! please do not leave the readers on cliffhangers! thank you....
Please update soon. This story is good. And I'm hoping it won't go till 2000 chapters.. Although it's current slow pace is telling....
