Finnian went silent for a couple of seconds. When he finally spoke, his voice was thick with complex emotion. "Are you having fun? Daddy might have to spend the New Year abroad. I won't be back until after the holidays. Be a good girl for Mommy."
"Mommy, can we go visit Daddy for the New Year? I think Daddy and Grandma must be so lonely all by themselves," Brynlee said earnestly, still fiddling with a tiny plastic animal.
Kaia spoke up. "We're not going abroad. We're spending the holidays here with Grandma and Grandpa."
Hearing Kaia's voice from the other end of the line, Finnian felt a sharp sting in his chest. An indescribable ache settled over him, almost as if he were being punished, forced to taste the very same heartbreak Kaia had endured for years. Yet, he accepted the pain willingly.
"Stay home and celebrate with Mommy, Brynlee. I have to take care of Grandma here. She's in the hospital," Finnian said, his voice low and gentle.
"What's wrong with Grandma? Is she sick?" Brynlee immediately looked up at the camera, then ran over and grabbed the phone.
As the screen jostled, Finnian caught a clear glimpse of Kaia. She was wearing a stunning magenta dress paired with a light coat, looking as radiant as a spring morning. Finnian's gaze darkened with longing. Just as he tried to get a better look, Brynlee's adorable face filled the screen.
"Daddy, what's wrong with Grandma? Why does she have to be in a hospital far away? Can't she come back?" Because Brynlee had spent so much of her young life in hospitals, she knew exactly how miserable it was to be sick and stuck in a ward.
"Grandma's condition is a bit complicated. She has to stay here for treatment," Finnian explained, carefully omitting any mention of Elaine's actual diagnosis.
Hearing this, Kaia frowned slightly.
Just then, Simon's voice drifted in from the hallway, soft and affectionate. "Kaia, lunch is ready. Shall we head downstairs?"
Kaia's reply was equally warm and melodic. "Sure. Let me just wait for Brynlee to finish talking to her dad, and then we'll go down."

The readers' comments on the novel: What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage
Finnian is finally awake to Noelle’s schemes! I hope he cuts the cord completely and brutally. He needs to truly repent and suffer the consequences for all the pain he caused Kaia and his blatant favoritism toward Noelle. Only then should there be even a slight hope of Kaia softening her heart....
Why does this book take so long to update, instead of 5 chapters mentioned above, we are getting about one chapter a day on average! please do not leave the readers on cliffhangers! thank you....
Please update soon. This story is good. And I'm hoping it won't go till 2000 chapters.. Although it's current slow pace is telling....
