What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 636

She used to think she would live in this very courtyard until she grew old, which was exactly why she had poured so much of her soul into maintaining this home.

Now, she had gone from a bride brimming with hope to an utterly disillusioned ex-wife.

It turned out that initial love wasn't a guarantee that two people would make it to the end; sometimes, the journey simply fell apart halfway.

The fireworks continued to blaze, this round shooting up like silver, sparkling trees, each burst more blinding than the last.

Finnian seemed to have put far more thought into the display this year. Perhaps his sudden rush back to the country was entirely just to coax a smile out of his daughter.

Kaia parked the car in the driveway and killed the engine.

Just then, Finnian walked out from the living room doors, carrying Brynlee in his arms.

Halfway across the yard, Brynlee wriggled down to the ground, and Finnian followed her over to the car.

Kaia glanced up at him. He was wearing a stark black turtleneck sweater, looking exactly the same as he always did.

"Mom, Mom, did you see? Daddy's sparklers are so beautiful! I'm so happy! Hurry up and get out so we can watch together!"

Brynlee was bundled up in a bright red puffer jacket, clutching an unlit sparkler in her tiny hand, her eyes crinkling into joyful crescents.

Kaia stepped out of the car, took her daughter's small hand, and looked up as another firework exploded overhead.

Through the shimmering light, Finnian's dark eyes shifted slowly, locking onto Kaia's face.

Bathed in the warm glow of the fireworks, she was dressed simply, her long hair cascading freely down her back. The soft lighting made her look breathtakingly elegant and radiant.

Finnian stared at her in silence. He didn't know how long he had been watching her until Kaia finally noticed his gaze. She self-consciously reached up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, prompting him to quickly avert his eyes and stare at the ground.
