Finnian's expression instantly turned to ice. He looked down, completely avoiding Kaia's gaze.
Seeing him dodge the subject only made Kaia angrier. "I stepped aside so you two could be together. You should have happily gotten married and started a family by now. What exactly is the hold-up?"
"Is being together out in the open missing that thrilling element of sneaking around?"
"Or maybe... you guys just really get off on the taboo..."
Before Kaia could even finish her sentence, Finnian shot up from the sofa and clamped his hand firmly over her mouth.
Startled by the sudden movement, Kaia froze. A second later, Finnian leaned in and whispered harshly in her ear, "Keep your voice down. Brynlee might hear you."
Kaia was already furious, and his warning just threw fuel on the fire.
She forcefully shoved his arm away, glaring at him. "Even if I don't say it loud, it's still the undeniable truth. Finnian, are you feeling guilty?"
Finnian only registered how incredibly soft her lips had felt against his palm. A strange, electric jolt shot straight to his core, leaving his heart hammering against his ribs.
He was a twenty-nine-year-old man in his prime. He hadn't been intimate with a woman in over a year. It wasn't that he lacked the desire—he actually wanted it very badly—it was just...
"I'm not feeling guilty, but I was definitely wrong," Finnian admitted, dropping his voice in deep remorse. "My mistake was failing to set clear boundaries. I was an absolute failure of a husband. I wasted your youth and your passion. I drained your energy and gave you nothing but grief..."
As he spoke, Finnian glanced up at Kaia before quickly dropping his eyes again. "Everything that happened is entirely my fault. Kaia, I'm so sorry."
Kaia had fully braced herself for a blowout screaming match, but... why wasn't he fighting back like he used to?
Why was he suddenly showing weakness, apologizing, and putting on this pathetic, remorseful face?
"Finnian..." Kaia found him entirely unrecognizable.
"Yeah," Finnian immediately looked back up at her. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness anymore, but I swear I will reflect on my mistakes."

The readers' comments on the novel: What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage
Finnian is finally awake to Noelle’s schemes! I hope he cuts the cord completely and brutally. He needs to truly repent and suffer the consequences for all the pain he caused Kaia and his blatant favoritism toward Noelle. Only then should there be even a slight hope of Kaia softening her heart....
