"Nothing, I'm just at a buddy's place. Why did you go to my apartment?"

Kaia was surprised. Silas had gone back to the Veridian Apartments to look for her, and when he saw she wasn't there, he called to check on her.

"I'm fine. I'm just here picking up Brynlee. She's at her dad's house." As Kaia spoke, she stood up and walked out toward the yard.

Finnian strained his ears but couldn't quite catch what she was saying outside.

He leaned back against the sofa, his fingers drumming rhythmically against the armrest.

First Simon, now Silas. Kaia was certainly keeping busy.

Kaia chatted for two minutes before walking back inside. Finnian's face was dark as he asked, "Is Silas pursuing you?"

Kaia paused. He had actually guessed it.

"That's none of your business."

"That kid didn't just suddenly develop feelings for you this year. By the looks of it, he's had his sights set on you for years," Finnian mocked coldly.

"I just found out about it myself. Don't even try to use this to settle old scores," Kaia warned, worried Finnian would blow it out of proportion.

"What is there to settle? I don't have any right to manage your life anymore," Finnian said with bitter self-awareness. "Whoever you decide to be with, all I can do is stand by and watch."

Kaia stared at him, feeling like he was a complete stranger. This wasn't the arrogant, tight-lipped Finnian she used to know.

Had his entire personality been replaced?

Or was the world truly ending?

Finnian noticed Kaia wasn't speaking, just staring intently at him.
