On the morning of New Year's Eve, Simon arrived at The Chavez Residence a little past ten o'clock.
He walked in carrying bags of varying sizes, with Anna—sporting cute little pigtails—trailing behind him, clutching her own small gifts for Brynlee.
Warren Chavez spotted them from the doorway and immediately stood up, calling out to Kaia, "Simon is here, hurry and go greet him!"
Kaia was startled. She had only spoken to him about it that morning and assumed he wouldn't arrive until closer to mealtime.
Kaia hurried out, closely followed by her little shadow.
When Brynlee saw Anna, she let out a delighted squeal. "Anna is here!"
Her cheeks flushed, Kaia walked up to Simon and reached for two of the heavier bags in his hands.
Simon lowered his voice. "These are a bit heavy, let me carry them."
"It's fine, I can manage." Kaia grabbed the bags and quickly carried them into the living room.
The two little girls were thrilled to see each other and immediately dashed upstairs to their secret base—the children's playroom.
Jane emerged from the kitchen, wiping her hands on an apron. The housekeeper had gone home for the holidays, so Jane was in charge of the cooking today.
"Simon, why did you bring so many things?" she welcomed him warmly. "It's just a casual family dinner, there's no need to be so polite."
Simon smiled warmly and greeted them respectfully. "Happy New Year, Mr. Chavez, Mrs. Chavez. These are just a few tokens of appreciation from my family's elders."
Hiding in the adjacent storage room to put the gifts away, Kaia was suddenly struck by a bizarre sensation.
It felt exactly as if she were a young bride-to-be, hiding bashfully in the back while her beloved arrived to formally propose to her parents.
But... she had already been married before.
Why was she experiencing these inexplicable, girlish jitters?
Thinking back, when Finnian had visited her family in the past, he had also brought plenty of gifts. But he would just shake her father's hand and exchange stiff, polite pleasantries, as if it were a corporate networking event.

The readers' comments on the novel: What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage
Finnian is finally awake to Noelle’s schemes! I hope he cuts the cord completely and brutally. He needs to truly repent and suffer the consequences for all the pain he caused Kaia and his blatant favoritism toward Noelle. Only then should there be even a slight hope of Kaia softening her heart....
