What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 648

The night deepened, and a vintage streetlamp flickered to life just as the heavy wooden door finally swung open.

Simon stepped out first. He stopped in the doorway, turned back, and reached out to take Kaia's hand.

Walking side-by-side down the cobblestone path, they made their way toward the car.

In that precise moment, Finnian stopped breathing.

He stared unblinkingly at the two of them.

Simon was looking down, murmuring something to Kaia. She tilted her head to listen, a beautiful, brilliant smile breaking across her face.

The glow of the streetlamp washed over her, making her look incredibly serene and radiant.

Finnian recognized that version of Kaia.

In the past, she used to walk beside him just like that. No matter what he said, whether he spoke a lot or a little, Kaia would always answer earnestly and listen to every word.

She had always been such a deeply sincere woman.

The pair reached the car. Simon opened the passenger door of the Maybach, and Kaia slid inside.

Simon leaned in, pulling the seatbelt across to buckle her in. His tall frame hovered intimately over Kaia's.

Kaia laughed softly. "I can do it myself."

Simon simply pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "It's fine, I've got it."

Finnian never anticipated witnessing such a scene. Kaia didn't reject Simon's affection at all.

In fact, she kept talking to him, her face alight with happiness.

The sleek black Maybach smoothly pulled away.

Dexter glanced at Finnian through the rearview mirror and asked cautiously, "Mr. Sanders, should we keep following?"

Finnian gave no answer. He just watched the car disappear into the distance, the entire world suddenly devoid of sound.

He pressed a hand over his chest, feeling a suffocating, dull ache tearing at his heart.
