Finnian at the head of the table had a grim expression, his thoughts unreadable as he simply stared at the woman in front of the projector.
After Kaia had said her piece, she returned to her seat.
"What is Dr. Chavez trying to do? Steal the credit?"
"I never realized she was such a petty person."
"Will Mr. Sanders agree to this?"
"Dr. Lawrence has been so good to her for all these years. This must be so heartbreaking for her."
"Quiet!"
A steady, powerful male voice cut through the murmuring, silencing the room.
"This meeting is adjourned. Everyone may leave," Finnian said, not giving a final decision, simply dismissing the attendees.
"Kaia, does it have to be this way?"
Just as Kaia was gathering her materials to leave, his voice came at her like a physical blow. "Do you have to drive her to the edge?"
Kaia picked up her documents and looked at him. "I will be submitting a formal report to the R&D department leadership and company management."
"And if I refuse?" The room was empty now. Finnian walked over and closed the conference room door. He stood with his hands in his pockets, his face radiating displeasure. "She's not just my sister-in-law; she's my family. Kaia, you've picked the wrong person to challenge."
"I simply did what I believe is best for the company and the project," Kaia said calmly, not shying away from his cold, angry glare.
"Best?" The anger in Finnian's eyes flared, but he suppressed it. "Kaia, have you considered what kind of situation Noelle is in right now? She's lost her husband, she's being forced to go abroad, and at this exact moment, you choose to take her project away from her, laying out your so-called proof of originality in front of everyone, staging a coup to push her into a corner. Are you really doing this for the company? Or for yourself?"
"What do you want people to say?"
"That Kaia Chavez took advantage of her sister-in-law's misfortune to seize power and steal credit?"
"That you're cold-blooded, heartless, and utterly undignified?"
Finnian was truly furious. He could not accept her decision to do this at such a time.
