Stephen gazed intently at Natania from far across the garden, as though he wanted to carve the very image of her into his mind. His eyes were filled with tender affection.
However, Natania merely returned his gaze calmly. The love and pain that once plagued her were now gone, leaving only apathy behind.
She nonchalantly shut the curtains so she didn't have to look at that disgusting face any longer.
A short while later, a housekeeper hurried over. "Ms. Wendell, one Mr. Fost is outside the gates, saying that he wants to see you."
Natania answered indifferently, "I don't want to see him. Tell him to leave."
The housekeeper nodded and left, not bringing him up again. Hence, Natania pushed the matter to the back of her mind.
Later in the evening, it started to rain once more. Having woken up from his nap, Benjamin felt much better and was back to his old energetic self again.
He pressed himself against the window and looked out, only to suddenly exclaim, "Natty, Natty, look! I think that someone is kneeling outside the gates."
His childish voice was sweet, filled with curiosity and a hint of confusion.
It was only then that Natania realized she had forgotten something. She darted over to the window and looked in the direction Benjamin was pointing.
As expected, Stephen was kneeling in the pouring rain, his lone figure appearing particularly pitiful amidst the dismal weather. He had always been adept at using this tactic to harm himself so he could manipulate others into doing what he wanted.
If this had been in the past, she would've instantly thrown herself into his arms, utterly heartbroken at seeing him in such a state.
But now? She just thought it was ridiculous.
"Let him kneel if that's what he wants," she uttered emotionlessly. "If he faints, send him to the hospital. I don't want him to die right outside the gates."
She never would've thought there would come a day when she would say such cruel words.
That night, Natania's sleep was fitful. She kept dreaming about all the moments she had shared with Stephen, especially that time she was abducted. During that incident, she and Stephen had both been willing to throw their lives away for the sake of the other.
