Elliot really hadn't changed at all. He still knew exactly how to talk in a way people liked hearing, and once he latched onto Cecilia, he stayed glued to her.
Nathaniel looked like he still had something to say.
But Elliot let go of Cecilia and turned right to him, throwing praise his way too.
"Dad, you look seriously radiant today. More and more manly every time I see you. I need to learn from you."
Nathaniel wasn't buying any of it.
"If you want to learn from me, then follow your brother's example and start taking the company seriously."
The second the company came up, Elliot reached up and scratched his head.
He just didn't like being the boss.
All he wanted was to be a singer.
He had inherited Cecilia's gift for music.
His talent in that area was strong, and in the new generation, he was already a pop idol.
Cecilia understood that children from the same family could still turn out completely different.
"Alright, if Elliot wants to do something else, then let him do it. Anyway, Jon is there for the company."
"Or when Quentin and Luke grow up, they can manage the company too."
The moment Cecilia said that, Nathaniel had nothing left to say.
Elliot grinned at once.
"Mom, you're still the best."
But the next second, the smile on Elliot's face froze.
Because Cecilia said, "If I'm doing well, then when are you getting married so you can give mommy a little grandchild?"
Elliot said, "...Why are you just like Grandma? No rush, no rush. I'm still young. I don't want to get married and have kids yet."
Cecilia looked at him, all helplessness.
Elliot took the chance and hurried back to his room.
*****
The weekend came.
Cecilia and the whole family went back to Rainsworth Manor.
Now that Elena and Wren were getting old, they spent their days at the house tending flowers and plants and playing cards.
They still hadn't remarried.
But maybe age had changed things. They had both let go of a lot, and they got along peacefully now, nothing like the way they used to clash before.
Elena said to Cecilia, "A person's whole life is gone in the blink of an eye. Before you know it, the children are all grown up. Ceci, you've done more than anyone."
Cecilia smiled.
"Mom, we've still got a long road ahead of us."
The corners of Elena's mouth lifted. "That's right. A long one. We can take it slow."
