Chapter One Hundred And Sixteen: Emily Is Coming Home.
“I understand, doctor. We shall be there.”
Her voice had been steady when she said it. It was too steady. Then she disconnected the call. And silence followed. The air in the room felt heavier.
Cassienne lowered the phone slowly from her ear. For a second, she just stared at the blank screen, as if the words she had just heard were still echoing inside it.
Merrick was the first to step closer.
“I hope she’s okay?” he asked quickly, already crossing the short distance toward her.
Aurora also walked closer, one hand flying to her mouth. Daisy followed behind, her glass forgotten on the table.
Corren remained seated for half a second longer, his eyes fixed on Cassienne’s face. He didn’t know who Doctor Marvin was. He didn’t know what the call meant. But the way her fingers tightened around her phone told him everything he needed to know. Whatever it was, it was serious.
Cassienne inhaled deeply and then nodded.
“Yes,” she said softly. “She’s fine.”
Her lips curved into a fragile smile. “She’s finally coming home.”
A flicker of relief passed across Merrick’s face. Aurora let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
But Cassienne still has more to say.
“She’s coming to Dreston and I,” she added quietly.
The words fell like a stone into still water. Silence rippled outward.
Aurora’s hand covered her mouth fully now. Daisy’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“She cannot know about our divorce,” Cassienne finished. “That’s the point.”
A soft gasp escaped Daisy. Corren finally stood.
“What is going on?” His voice was steady, and curious. But there was steel underneath it. “I need to
know.”
Cassienne looked at him. For a second, she wanted to avoid it. To smile. Even to brush it aside. But she
didn’t.
Merrick stepped in gently.
“Emily,” he began carefully, glancing at Cassienne for permission. She gave a small nod. “Cassienne’s

mother has been under medical supervision for years.”
Corren frowned slightly.
“She started having episodes when Cassienne was still a teenager,” Merrick continued. “Severe anxiety triggers. Emotional instability. She had to be admitted long–term. Doctor Marvin has been overseeing her case.”
Aurora spoke softly, “She’s been in and out of clarity. Sometimes she remembers things perfectly. Sometimes she doesn’t.”
“And stress,” Daisy added, “is the worst trigger.”
Merrick nodded.
Cassienne continued. “Doctor Marvin has always warned us that any emotional shock could push her back into an episode.”
Corren’s jaw tightened. “And she doesn’t know,” he said slowly.
“No,” Cassienne replied. “She doesn’t know about the divorce.” She swallowed.
“In her mind… Dreston and I are still happily married.”
The word happy felt foreign in her mouth.
“She wants to visit us,” Cassienne continued. “She’s been asking. The doctor thinks it will help her recovery to be around familiar faces. But we must avoid anything that can upset her.”
Corren understood now. “So you have to move back with Dreston,” he said quietly.
Cassienne nodded. “For one month,” she whispered. “At least.”
The room fell silent again. Corren’s mind raced. One month. With Dreston. In the same house, sleeping under the same roof, and playing husband and wife.
His chest tightened. A part of him wanted to say no, to protest. And to tell her there must be another way.
But another part of him, the stronger, steadier, part of him, knew this wasn’t about pride. And this wasn’t about rivalry. But this was about a mother who had been ill for years.
He studied Cassienne’s face. There was no hesitation in her eyes when it came to her mother.
She would burn down her own happiness before risking Emily’s health. And that was the woman he
loved.
Aurora moved closer and wrapped her arms around Cassienne.
“You’re not going to risk her,” she said softly.
“Never,” Cassienne replied immediately.

Merrick stepped forward and placed his hand on her shoulder. “You’ve always been strong for her,” he said gently. “You’ll handle this too.”
But Corren just stood, watching, and waiting. When it was his turn, he pulled her into his arms. And she melted into him. She felt tired now.
For a moment, he allowed himself to hold her tightly. But then, he spoke with a calm voice. “If this is what she needs,” he said near her ear, “then we’ll do it.”
We.
Cassienne’s eyes closed. “Thank you,” she whispered. But inside, she knew. This would hurt him. And it would hurt her too.
After a while, she pulled back. “I need some time alone,” she said softly.
They all understood her. One by one, they hugged her again. Merrick pressed a kiss to her forehead. “ Everything will be fine,” he promised.
Corren lingered a second longer than the others. He wanted to say more. But he didn’t.
He simply nodded and left. The door clicked shut behind him.
Then silence wrapped around her. Cassienne sank slowly onto the couch. She had known this day would
come.
Doctor Marvin had hinted at it, and sent a reminder too. This was inevitable. But knowing didn’t make it
easier. She pressed her palms to her face.
How were she and Dreston supposed to pretend for a month? To act like a married couple. And to share the same room. To lie without her mother seeing through them?
Her chest tightened. This wasn’t just acting. It was reopening a wound she had worked so hard to close.
At the Tremont residence, tension filled the living room. Joseph stood near the fireplace, arms crossed.
Abigail sat rigidly on the sofa. And Jessica stood in front of them, her face pale.
“I did not leak anything,” she insisted. “I swear.”
“You were the only one who knew,” Joseph said sharply.
“I knew about her identity, yes. But I did not send any footage to anyone!”
Dreston remained quiet, watching her carefully.
Jessica rarely lied. It wasn’t in her nature.
