The kitchen slowly returned to order after Emily retreated to the dining room.

Cassienne refused to look at Dreston for a full thirty seconds.

He, on the other hand, looked entirely pleased with himself.

You could at least pretend to be embarrassed, she muttered, gathering the plates.

I am embarrassed,he replied casually, picking up the pan of pancakes.

You’re smirking.

That’s my embarrassed face.

She shot him a look.

He leaned closer as they arranged the table together, lowering his voice.

You looked very comfortable on that counter.

Dreston,” she hissed softly, cheeks warming again.

He brushed past her intentionally when reaching for the cutlery, his hand sliding briefly along the small of her back.

She stiffened.

Stop touching me.

I’m supposed to be married to you.

That doesn’t mean you can behave like this in front of my mother.

He leaned close enough for his breath to graze her ear.

She wants grandchildren.

Cassienne nearly dropped the fork in her hand. Behind them, Emily’s voice drifted in sweetly from the dining room.

You don’t have to stop on my account!

Cassienne froze.

Mother!she called out, mortified.

Emily laughed lightly. I am only saying what every mother thinks.

Dreston grinned unapologetically.

They carried the dishes out together.

The breakfast spread looked warm and invitingfluffy pancakes stacked neatly, golden omelets, toasted sourdough, fresh fruit, and steaming coffee.

Emily clasped her hands together when she saw it.

You two cooked all this?

Yes,Cassienne answered quickly before Dreston could add anything inappropriate.

Emily looked between them knowingly. And what else did you cook before I arrived?

Cassienne’s face turned a deep shade of pink.

Dreston pulled out her chair for her with exaggerated politeness.

Please sit, Mrs. Tremont,he said smoothly.

Emily raised a brow but didn’t say anything.

Cassienne sat down as he requested without another word. Dreston was not letting off easily. And for a moment, there was peace.

The clink of cutlery. The soft sound of coffee being poured. Sunlight filtering gently through the windows.

Cassienne took a careful sip of her coffee.

That was when she felt something. A slow, deliberate touch against her thigh.

And she froze.

Under the table, Dreston’s hand had found her. His fingers brushed upward just slightly.

Cassienne choked on her coffee and nearly spilled it.

Are you alright?Emily asked innocently.

Yes!Cassienne said too quickly.

Dreston calmly cut into his omelet like nothing had happened.

His fingers continued their subtle torment beneath the table. Cassienne shot him a warning glare.

He didn’t even look at her. Instead, he took a bite of pancake and said pleasantly, The syrup is perfect.

Her knee jerked when his hand moved higher. Emily pretended to be deeply invested in buttering her

toast.

Is the food too spicy?Emily asked mildly.

No, mother,Dreston answered, still composed. Everything tastes excellent.

Cassienne pressed her leg against his to stop his wandering hand. He only tightened his grip slightly in

retaliation.

She inhaled sharply.

Dreston,she whispered under her breath.

He leaned slightly closer, still appearing perfectly respectful above the table.

You look beautiful when you’re flustered.

Emily cleared her throat loudly.

Dreston’s hand immediately retreated back onto the table.

And silence followed.

Emily took a slow sip of her tea.

I think, she began thoughtfully, I will stay with Abigail for two more days.

Cassienne blinked. Mother?

And after that,” Emily continued calmly, I would like to return home.

Dreston straightened slightly. Emily, why so sudden? You still have two more weeks with us.

Emily smiled softly.

I want to go home and start counting months.

Cassienne nearly choked again.

I am sure I will receive good news soon,Emily added gently. I only came to see you children. And now that I see how deeply in love you both are, I am satisfied.
