“Dreston, it’s late.”

Cassienne stood in the middle of the bedroom, still in her travel clothes. Her voice was calm, but her eyes were worried.

“Sleep over it. Please. We can handle this tomorrow.”

Dreston was already putting on his jacket.

“No,” he replied without looking at her. “I can’t.”

He grabbed his car keys from the side table.

“I just found out that I’ve been living a lie for years, Cass. I can’t sleep with that.”

She walked toward him.

“This is anger talking.”

“It’s not anger,” he snapped. Then he paused, softened slightly. “It’s humiliating.”

He ran a hand through his hair.

“You were right there. And I couldn’t see you.”

His voice dropped.

“All these years. From when we were teenagers. I pushed you away. I treated you coldly. I married you and still held back. All because I thought someone else was my first love.”

Cassienne’s chest tightened.

“Dreston…”

“Tina robbed me,” he continued, his jaw clenched. “She robbed me of my childhood truth. She robbed me of…..you.”

He moved toward the door.

“Stay,” Cassienne pleaded softly.

But he was already walking out.

“This is personal. I need to end it.”

He didn’t call the driver. But when this driver approached him,

“I’ll drive,” he said coldly.

“Dreston…” She walked toward him slowly. “I knew you’d come back.”

Before he could respond, she wrapped her arms around him. “I knew you were just confused. Cassienne’s success must have clouded your judgment. But it’s okay. I forgive you.”

He did not hug her back. But he did not push her away either. He just stood there, still.

Tina pulled away and smiled up at him. “Come. Sit. We have so much to talk about.”

He followed her into the living room. And he sat. She sat opposite him, glowing with excitement.

“I knew you could never leave your childhood love,” she continued. “We’ve been through too much together.”

Dreston let her talk. He let her build her illusion.

She spoke about their teenage years. About fate. About destiny. About how she had always known he would return.

When she finally paused to breathe, he spoke.

“Tina.”

She blinked. She did not know what to say because she did not know the story behind it. She had never

known.

“It’s just a pen,” she repeated weakly.

His eyes darkened.

“You liar.”

She flinched.

She reached out to touch him, but his raised hand stopped her.

“Don’t.”

His voice was sharp and cold.

“Don’t come near me.”

Tina’s heart began to race.

“Dreston, what’s going on?”

“You stole that box from Cassienne.”

The words landed like a slap on her face and it drained of color.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
