Cassienne paced across the bedroom, her bare feet brushing the soft carpet as she walked back and forth between the bed and the tall window overlooking the dark estate grounds.

Her phone was in her hand. And her eyes kept drifting to the screen, from time to time.

There were no new messages, or calls coming in and it scared her more than she could admit. She looked at the time again. It’s almost midnight.

Her chest tightened.

“He should have been back by now…”

She tried to stay calm.

Dreston had been furious when he left. She knew that. Anyone could see the storm in his eyes. But still… he should have returned by now.

Or at least called.

She walked back to the window and looked outside. The driveway lights glowed softly in the distance.

But Dreston’s sports car was not there.

Her fingers tightened around her phone.

“Maybe he stayed somewhere to calm down.”

But the thought didn’t comfort her. Dreston wasn’t the type to disappear like this. Her mind replayed his face before he left. The anger. The guilt, and the pain. Cassienne rubbed her forehead.

“Why didn’t I stop him?”

And just then….her phone rang. The sudden sound made her jump. She looked down at the screen.

Joseph Tremont.

Her heart skipped. Why would her father–in–law be calling her at this hour? 1

A cold feeling spread slowly through her chest. She answered immediately.

“Father?”

For a moment, Joseph didn’t speak. But when he finally did, his voice sounded heavier than she had ever

heard it.

“Cassienne… where are you?”

“I’m at home,” she replied quickly. “Is something wrong?”

There was another pause.

Her breathing stopped.

“… Why?”

Joseph’s voice lowered.

“Dreston had an accident.”

Then finally… “Is he…?”

“He’s in surgery,” Joseph replied quietly. “Come quickly.”

The call ended. And for several seconds Cassienne stood frozen in the middle of the room.

Her phone slipped from her hand and landed softly on the carpet.

“No…”

The word came out as a whisper. Then suddenly she moved fast. She grabbed her coat, her bag, anything within reach.

Her hands were shaking so badly she could barely hold the car keys.

“No, no, no…”

Tears were already forming in her eyes as she rushed out of the room.

The hospital corridors were bright, cold, and full of tension.

Cassienne barely remembered how she arrived there. She only knew she had driven like someone possessed.

When she reached the surgical floor, she saw them.

Joseph, Abigail, Sheila, Ray, Garry, Daisy, and Aurora.

Even Merrick and Corren stood nearby. Everyone turned when they saw her.

Cassienne’s eyes searched the room immediately. “Where is he?”

Joseph stepped forward.

“He’s still in surgery.”

Her breath trembled. “How bad?”

Joseph didn’t answer immediately. That was enough to terrify her.

“Father!” she demanded.

“He hit the highway divider,” Joseph said quietly. “The car rolled several times.”

Tina held her cheek, tears already falling.

Another shove from Cassienne sent her stumbling back.

“You stole from me!” Cassienne shouted. “You pretended to be my friend!”

Her voice grew louder. “Do you remember that? High school! You pretended to care about me!”

Tina shook her head, crying harder. “I was young, I didn’t-”

“You stole the box!” Cassienne screamed. The entire hallway fell silent.

“You stole the one thing that mattered to him! You robbed us of years of love!”

Tina collapsed into a chair, sobbing.

“I loved him! I didn’t want to lose him!”
