Finally, Cassienne opened her eyes, but the world felt different in her eyes. For a moment she didn’t
know where she was.
The ceiling above her was unfamiliar, it looked white, flat, with a faint humming light fixture that buzzed softly in the silence. The smell in the air was sharp and clean, the unmistakable scent of hospital.
Her memory rushed back slowly. She remembered the accident. Dreston. She remembered his cold eyes
when he looked at her.
She remembered how he referred to her as his “ex–wife.”
Her chest tightened painfully, and she closed her eyes again as if that might erase the memory, but it stayed.
A soft voice spoke beside her.
“Cass…?”
She turned her head slightly.
Aurora sat beside the bed, leaning forward in the chair. Daisy stood near the window with her arms crossed, though the tension in her face made it clear she had been watching Cassienne closely.
Aurora smiled faintly when she saw her awake.
“Hey,” she said softly.
Cassienne’s throat felt dry.
“…How long?”
Aurora reached for the glass of water on the bedside table and helped her sit up slightly.
“About two hours.”
Cassienne took the glass with trembling hands and drank slowly. Her body still felt weak.
The moment she finished, her eyes immediately searched the room. “Where’s Dreston?”
Aurora and Daisy exchanged a quick glance. Cassienne noticed it and her heart sank.
“…Is he okay?”
“He’s stable,” Daisy answered quickly.
Cassienne nodded slightly, though the tension in her chest remained.
“Can I see him?”
Aurora placed a gentle hand on her arm. “Not yet.”

“Why?” Cassienne’s voice grew tight.
Aurora hesitated. “Because you need to rest.”
Cassienne looked between the two of them.. “You’re not telling me something.”
Daisy sighed quietly.
“Cass…”
Just then the door opened, and Abigail walked into the room. The moment Cassienne saw her mother–in- law, the fragile composure she had been holding cracked.
“Mother…”
Abigail moved quickly to the bedside and took her hand.
“My dear.”
Cassienne’s eyes filled with tears again. “Is he awake?”
Abigail nodded slowly. “Yes.”
Cassienne’s breath caught.
“And…?”
Abigail’s expression softened. The sadness in her eyes said everything. Cassienne nodded and looked
away.
“I know,” she whispered.
The silence in the room deepened. Aurora gently squeezed her shoulder.
“Cass…”
But Cassienne was staring down at her hands now. Her voice came out faint. “He doesn’t remember me.”
It wasn’t a question. They all knew that. But Abigail nodded. “Yes.”
Cassienne swallowed hard. For a moment no one spoke. Then the door opened again. The doctor entered the room, holding a small chart.
“Good afternoon,” he said gently.
Cassienne looked up at him.
“How are you feeling?”
She gave a weak shrug. “I’ve been better.”
The doctor smiled slightly.

“That’s understandable.”
He moved closer to the bed.
“I’d like to check your vitals.”
Cassienne nodded quietly while he examined her. He checked her pulse first, then her blood pressure, listening carefully to her breathing.
Everything seemed calm. And finally he stepped back.
“You gave everyone quite a scare,” he said.
Cassienne looked embarrassed. “I’m sorry.”
“No need to apologize,” the doctor replied. “Your body simply reached its limit.”
Cassienne looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
The doctor exchanged a brief look with Abigail.
Then he spoke carefully.
“When you fainted, we ran a full evaluation to make sure there were no complications.”
Cassienne nodded slowly.
“And during that evaluation…” He paused slightly. “We discovered something.”
Cassienne frowned.
“…What?”
The doctor’s voice softened.
“You’re pregnant.”
The words seemed to hang in the air. For a moment Cassienne didn’t react. She simply stared at him.
“…What?”
“You’re about five to six weeks pregnant.”
The room suddenly felt too quiet. Aurora squeezed her hand. And Daisy stepped closer.
But Cassienne wasn’t looking at either of them. Her mind had gone somewhere else.
Pregnant.
Her heart began to beat faster. Her hand slowly moved to her stomach.

Her voice was barely a whisper. “… Are you sure?”
The doctor nodded.
“The test results are clear.”
Cassienne sat very still.
Pregnant. She repeated in her mind and she closed her eyes slowly..Memories rushed through her mind.
Everything she had done with him in the kitchen, and how her mother interrupted the moment.
She remembered her first time with him. Her heart broke the more she thought about it.
Dreston, washing her hair in the bathtub, promising her he would never hurt her again.
Dreston, pulling her close and whispering: “Let’s get married again.”
And she had believed him.
They had talked about children. About building a family together, and about starting over.. He had wanted
it so badly.
The thought made her chest ache. Now the baby existed.
But the man who wanted that future…
He didn’t remember any of it.
Tears rolled down her cheeks silently. Aurora wiped them gently. “What are you thinking?”
Cassienne laughed softly through the tears. “I’m thinking… the timing is cruel.”
Her fingers rested lightly over her stomach. She had imagined this moment so differently. She had imagined telling Dreston with excitement.
Maybe over dinner. Or probably after a quiet evening together. She imagined his reaction. His smile. The way he would lift her into his arms.
But now…
He didn’t even remember loving her.
Her voice trembled. “He wanted this.”
Aurora nodded gently.
“I know.”
Cassienne looked toward the door, her eyes distant. “We were already trying to build our life together again.”

She swallowed hard. “He asked me to marry him again.”
Daisy’s expression softened.
“Cass…”
Cassienne wiped her face.
