Cassienne walked through the hospital corridor to Dreston’s room. She stood in front of the door for a long moment, her fingers hovering over the handle.

The hallway lights reflected faintly on the polished floor beneath her feet. Somewhere in the distance, a nurse’s shoes clicked softly as she walked past.

But none of it reached Cassienne’s mind. Her thoughts were focused on the room in front of her.

Dreston was inside and awake. That was all that mattered to her.

Her heart beat harder the closer she stood to the door. For hours she had imagined this moment. A small part of her had hoped for something impossible.

Maybe when he sees her againThings might change and his memory will come back to normal. Her fingers trembled slightly.

Cassienne lifted her hand and knocked gently. The sound was soft.

Come in.Dreston’s voice answered, and she froze.

Even now, that voice could still make her heart race. She slowly opened the door and stepped inside the

quiet room.

Sunlight filtered softly through the tall window beside the bed. Machines hummed quietly in the background, their steady rhythm reminding her that the man lying on the hospital bed was still healing.

Cassienne’s eyes immediately went to him. He looked pale, but awake.

His dark curly hair was slightly messy, his strong features sharper now against the white hospital pillow. The bandage around his head was still there, and the monitors beside him blinked steadily.

For a moment, Cassienne’s breath caught. At least, he was alive. That alone made her chest tighten with

relief.

But then her eyes shifted slightly. And she saw Tina.

Tina was sitting beside the bed. Her chair was just beside it. Her hands were wrapped around Dreston’s hand, holding it gently like she wouldn’t let go.

Cassienne’s fingers curled slightly at her side. She stepped forward slowly.

Dreston noticed her as she walked closer. His grey eyes lifted and met hers.

Cassienne held her breath.

This was the moment.

MaybeMaybe something would change. Maybe recognition would flash in those eyes.

Or at least, maybe he would say her name the way he used to.

Or maybe….But nothing happened. His gaze remained calm, distant and cold. Just like before.

The hope in Cassienne’s chest quietly shattered. Still, she forced herself to move forward. Then she stopped a few steps away from the bed.

Hi

Her voice came out softer than she intended it to.

Dreston’s eyes studied her briefly. Then he gave a small nod.

Hello.

That was all he said. Just one word.

Cassienne felt the quiet pain settle deeper inside her chest. Still, she forced a small smile.

How are you feeling?

Dreston shifted slightly against the pillow. “Better.

His tone was polite. But nothing more, like they were strangers exchanging formal greetings.

Cassienne swallowed. Her eyes searched his face, almost desperately. But nothing in his expression changed. No warmth. No recognition.

He was just polite, and distant.

Tina spoke suddenly. Oh, Cassienne, thank you for coming to check on him.

Cassienne’s gaze slowly moved to her.

Tina’s face was calm. If for anything, she looked friendly. She smiled warmly, like they were still close friends.

I really appreciate it,Tina continued gently. It means a lot that you came.

Cassienne stared at her.

For a second, anger flashed through her chest so sharply it almost took her breath away.

Everything that had happened. All the lies and betrayal. The years that had been stolen from her.

And yet Tina sat there smiling like nothing had ever happened. Like she hadn’t destroyed everything.

Cassienne clenched her jaw quietly. She wanted to scream. She wanted to drag Tina out of that chair.

She wanted to expose every lie. But she couldn’t. At least not now. Not with Dreston watching. And not when his brain still needed rest.

So she forced herself to stay calm.

Tina noticed the tension in her eyes immediately. But her acting continued flawlessly.

She turned back to Dreston with a gentle smile.

Cassienne was always thoughtful like this, she said softly.

Cassienne barely heard her. All her attention had returned to Dreston. Her eyes slowly traced his face.

The familiar shape of his jaw. The faint shadow of stubble along his chin. Those lips.

Her breath caught.

Those same lips had kissed her countless times. In the kitchen, the hallway, the bathtub, and in bed.

At least, at every chance he got.

Now he looked at her like she meant nothing. The pain of it hit her harder than she expected. Once again, her vision blurred suddenly.

A tear slipped down her cheek before she even realized it. Cassienne blinked quickly, wiping it away.

She hadn’t meant to cry. But the memories were too strong.

The silence in the room grew heavier.

Then Tina spoke again.

OhCass, congratulations.

Cassienne froze. Her brows pulled together slightly.

What?

Tina smiled brightly. I heard the news.

Her eyes moved briefly to Cassienne’s stomach.

You’re pregnant, right?

The room seemed to tilt slightly.

Cassienne’s heart dropped violently in her chest. Her eyes snapped toward Dreston.

His reaction was immediate.

Shock crossed his face. Then confusion. Then something more. His hand slowly pulled away from Tina’s.

His grey eyes locked onto Cassienne. And this time they weren’t cold.

They were sharp, and accusing.

The tension in the room thickened. Dreston’s voice came out slower now.

You’re pregnant?

Cassienne couldn’t speak.

Her throat had gone completely dry.

Dreston’s jaw tightened. His eyes hardened. And then the words came.

Were you cheating on me before our divorce?

The sentence hit Cassienne like a physical blow. For a second, she couldn’t breathe.

Her face went pale. The room spun slightly around her.

Of all the things he could have said, or thought..

This.

Her lips parted, but no words came out.nShe was too stunned. And hurting. The silence stretched painfully.

But then Tina spoke quickly.

Dre, honey-

Her voice was soft and gentle as she reached for his arm.

You shouldn’t say things like that.

Dreston frowned slightly.

Tina shook her head gently.

You need to rest.

Her tone shifted slightly as she glanced toward Cassienne.

Cassienne is part of your past now.

The words landed like a knife.

Cassienne felt her heart break all over again. But Dreston looked back at her, and his eyes were still

conflicted.

For a moment Cassienne saw something there. She saw pain. But it wasn’t the same pain she felt.

This was different. Something like regret or betrayal.

He took a slow breath. Then his voice came out colder.

Thank you for coming to check on me.

The pause that followed felt endless.

But you should leave now.

Cassienne didn’t move. The words echoed in her mind again and again.

You should leave now.

Her vision blurred completely now. The tears she had been holding back finally fell. She tried to speak. To say something. Anything.

But her voice wouldn’t come out. She looked at him one last time, hoping. But his eyes had already turned away.

Tina squeezed his hand again gently, and that simple gesture shattered the last piece of Cassienne’s

heart.

She stepped back slowly. Her legs felt weak beneath her. But she walked away, and paused for just one

second.

Then she opened the door and walked out.
