Jessica couldn’t speak. Not because Joseph forbade her to. No. And not because Dreston asked her to continue.
But for the first time in her life, she didn’t have a quick remark, no playful comeback, no clever way to twist the situation into something lighter. She just stood there, her lips slightly parted, her eyes flicking between Dreston and Joseph.
Because this time… this wasn’t a joke.
Dreston stood firm, his gaze fixed on her. There was no softness in his eyes now. No patience. Just a quiet, pressing demand.
“Jessica,” he called again, his voice lower this time, but far more dangerous. “Finish what you were about to say.”
Jessica shifted her weight slightly. She tried to smile. She really did, but couldn’t.
“Well…” she began, her tone lighter than the tension in the room allowed. “It’s not really that important. Just something from before the accident. You know, nothing serious.”
Dreston didn’t blink, he was listening and his expression showed that he wasn’t joking. And that… made
her throat dry.
She tried again, forcing a soft laugh. “Honestly, you should rest. We don’t want to stress your brain-”
“I didn’t ask for advice.” He cut her short. And Jessica’s smile dropped.
A quiet breath left Dreston as he took a step closer. Enough to make her realise that he wasn’t going to let this go. At least not this time.
“You all keep saying you want to help me,” he said with a calm voice. “But the moment I get close to the truth… you all shut down.”
They couldn’t speak because they knew he was saying the truth.
“You’re not protecting me,” he added. “You’re keeping me in the dark.”
Jessica swallowed. Her fingers tightened slightly against the edge of the chair beside her. She wanted to speak. But Joseph’s warning look still lingered in her mind. And now, standing this close to Dreston, seeing that look in his eyes…
She hesitated, and that hesitation cost her. Because Dreston saw it, and he understood it. His expression shifted with a hint of disappointment.
A small nod followed, almost to himself. “Fine.”
The word fell flat and cold. And just as he was about to say something else, a knock came at the door. It broke the tension immediately. All heads turned. The door opened, and Steve stepped in, his posture

straight as always, his presence commanding.
“Sir,” he said, walking forward slightly. “Your phone.”
In his hand was a sleek black device, a new phone. A replacement of the old one.
For a second, no one spoke. The interruption had shifted everything.
Dreston’s gaze lingered on Jessica for a brief moment longer than necessary, just enough to let her know this wasn’t over.
Then, he turned and took the phone from Steve without a word.
“Thank you,” he simply said,
Steve nodded and stepped back. Dreston glanced at the device in his hand for a moment, then lifted his eyes. “I need some rest.”
That was all he said. He turned and walked out, leaving behind a room filled with stunned silence.
When he got back into his bedroom. He locked himself inside and let out a deep breath. He stood still for a moment, the phone still in his hand. His thumb hovered over the screen as it lit up.
It was a new phone. No contact, no history, no nothing. Just a new device. He exhaled slowly and walked further into the room, his steps unhurried. But inside, his mind wasn’t calm. It has always been
Cassienne.
Her name had been echoing in his head since he joined the family for breakfast. Every word his mother had said. Every reaction he got from his family, every silence spoke more than words. And it all pointed
back to her.
He sat at the edge of the bed, staring at the phone. Then, without thinking too much, he unlocked it and his fingers moved faster. It felt natural like muscle memory. He dialed a number. And only after the call began to ring, it was then he realized something, and he froze.
“… How do I know this number?”
His brows pulled together slightly. He didn’t remember it. Not consciously, and yet, he had dialed it without hesitation.
The line continued to ring and after the third ring.
“Hello?” Cassienne’s voice rang out, and it was familiar. And at that moment, Dreston’s heartbeat spiked so hard and fast. It was unexpected.
He straightened slightly, his grip tightening around the phone. Why…? Why did it feel like this? Like a teenager calling a girl he liked for the first time. It didn’t make sense.
Hello?” Cassienne’s voice came again, a little more alert this time.

Dreston swallowed lightly. “Cassienne.”
There was a pause on the other end. She didn’t believe it. He was calling her.
“Dreston?” Her voice changed immediately. It was softer and warmer now. Relief washed over her. “How are you?” she asked quickly. “Are you okay? Did you get home safely?”
Her concern came so naturally, so effortlessly and it did something to him. Something he couldn’t explain. “I’m fine,” he replied. “I got home safe.”
A small silence followed.
“How are you feeling?” she asked again, her tone gentler now.
“Better,” he said. “Much better.”
Another pause. Then he exhaled softly. “I won’t waste your time,” he added, getting straight to it.
Her heart skipped on the other end.
“I want to see you.”
Cassienne froze. Her fingers tightened slightly around her phone. “I… what?” she asked, almost in a
whisper.
“I want to see you,” he repeated. “Can you come over?”
Another pause from her end. Cassienne sat down slowly on the edge of her bed, her mind racing.
He wants to see me, after everything…After how he’s been…
Her heart started beating faster. She had missed him so much, and it hurts. At least, more than she
wanted to.
A part of her wanted to run to him immediately. To hold him, or tell him everything. She wanted to fix everything. But another part of her was scared.
What if she said too much or if she pushed him too far? What if she ruined his recovery? Her free hand moved instinctively to her abdomen and her chest tightened.
“I…” she began softly. “Okay.” Her voice steadied at once. “I’ll come.”
Dreston didn’t realise he had been holding his breath until that moment.
“Alright,” he said quietly. Then, something crossed his mind. “How is the baby?”
The words slipped out before he could stop them. And It caused Cassienne to freeze. Her eyes widened slightly.
He… asked? Her lips parted. And for a second, she couldn’t speak. She didn’t expect him to ask. At least not now. But he did.
