Chapter Two Hundred And Eleven: One Day At A Time.
After their intense moment on the marble island, Dreston and Cassienne moved quietly to the bedroom. The house was completely silent now. Everyone had left as he requested. It felt like the entire world had stepped back to give them this private space.
They climbed into bed together. The sheets were cool against their warm skin. For a while, they simply lay facing each other, breathing softly in the quiet room.
It felt like they were rediscovering one another all over again. Even for Cassienne, it was different this time. Dreston touched her with a kind of wonder, as if every part of her was new to him. And in many
ways, it was.
He made her feel things she had not felt in a long time. Every kiss, every gentle stroke of his hand, carried a fresh kind of hunger. Cassienne could not hide her emotions anymore. Her heart was too full.
She felt like telling him everything that led to his accident. The truth sat on the tip of her tongue, heavy and urgent. She almost said it. But at the last second, she stopped herself. She knew it would be dangerous. Her feelings were taking over her sense of reasoning, and she could not let that happen. Not
yet.
Cassienne sat up slowly. She reached for Dreston’s medication on the nightstand and poured a glass of water. She handed both to him without saying a word.
Dreston looked directly into her eyes as he took the pills. He swallowed them with the water, then returned the empty glass to her. She placed it back on the nightstand and climbed into bed again. She lay on her side, facing him. He was doing the same, looking at her with the same steady gaze.
“I feel like I am losing my mind, Cass,” he said softly.
Cassienne frowned, concern filling her eyes. “What? Why?”
Dreston smiled a little. “I don’t know. My heart has not stopped beating fast since we made love. My body still wants more, but I know I have to stop for my health. Still, I cannot help it.”
Cassienne smiled too. She understood exactly what he meant. She understood the words he had not yet spoken.
“Tell me something,” he continued. “Has it always been this good? I mean… making love.”
Cassienne laughed softly, the sound turning into a small cough. “Yes, it has,” she replied. “But I can tell you this. It gets better every time we make love. It always feels like the first time.”
Dreston did not reply right away, but she could see that her answer pleased him. It explained exactly how he was feeling right now. He still wanted to be inside her. He still wanted to lose himself in her completely. But he knew the risk. If he pushed himself too hard, his recovery would suffer. So he stayed still, content for now to simply look at her.
A long, comfortable silence settled between them. They kept looking into each other’s eyes, saying more with their gazes than words could express.

“I might also resume work on Wednesday,” Dreston said, breaking the quiet. “With you.” Cassienne looked surprised. “Are you sure you are ready to go back to work?”
Dreston smiled gently. “Not to work exactly. But to do something I started and could not finish.”
Cassienne felt confused. What could that possibly be? She thought about it for a moment, then decided not to press. Maybe it was something personal.
“Don’t think too much, Cass,” he said, as if reading her mind. “You will know when the time comes. Don’t worry.”
She nodded and smiled. Dreston reached out and swept the stray strands of hair away from her face, tucking them gently behind her ear. The gesture was so simple, yet it touched Cassienne’s heart deeply.
This man in front of her did not remember what they had shared before the accident. Yet here he was, acting like nothing had changed. Like they were still the same couple they had been before everything fell apart.
Was this God fighting for their love? Or was she simply reading too much meaning into it?
Dreston’s hand lingered on her cheek. His thumb brushed softly across her skin.
“I don’t know what happened between us before,” he said quietly, “but I know how I feel right now. When I look at you, something inside me settles. It feels right. Like this is where I am supposed to be.”
Cassienne’s eyes filled with tears again, but she did not let them fall. “It does feel right,” she whispered. I have waited so long to hear you say that.”
He pulled her closer until their foreheads touched. “Then let’s take it one day at a time. I want to know you again, Cass. All of you. Not just the parts my mind remembers, but the parts my heart is starting to
feel.”
She nodded against him. “One day at a time.”
They stayed like that for a long while, wrapped in each other’s warmth. The room was quiet except for their soft breathing and the occasional rustle of sheets when one of them shifted slightly.

Dreston kissed her forehead, then her nose, then her lips. The kiss was slow and tender, full of the new emotions they were both discovering. When he pulled back, he looked at her with a small, peaceful smile.
“I think I am going to like rediscovering you,” he said.
Cassienne laughed softly. “I think I am going to like being rediscovered.”
They talked a little more after that–small things, gentle questions. Dreston asked about her favorite color, her favorite food, the things that made her laugh. Cassienne answered honestly, enjoying the simple pleasure of sharing herself with him again. In return, she asked him what he remembered about his childhood, about the vineyard, about the flashes that kept coming to him.
Every answer brought them a little closer.
