Janet stared at the closed door, her brows drawing together slightly. She knew something was off. Her boss is back to the version of himself she used to know. He is cold, detached, and controlled.

Janet let out a small breath and shook her head.

“Good morning, ma’am,” she said into the phone as she placed the call. “The CEO wants you in his office right away.”

She ended the call and leaned back slightly in her chair.

Most people in Auralink had no idea what had really happened. To them, this was just Dreston being Dreston again.

The rest of the morning passed in a blur of meetings and quiet tension. Cassienne tried to focus on her work, but her mind kept drifting back to the way Dreston had kissed her. “Come in,” he said.

toward his desk.

“You wanted to see me?” she asked, her voice soft.

Dreston looked at her for a long moment. He remembered liking her. He remembered feeling comfortable with her. But something felt missing now. Something important.

“Yes,” he said. “Please, sit down.”

Tina sat in the chair across from him. She crossed her legs and tried to smile. “How are you feeling today?” she asked.

“Better,” he replied. “But there are still many things I do not remember.”

Tina nodded. “That is understandable. The doctors said it would take time.”

Dreston leaned back in his chair. “Tell me something, Tina. You knew that you and I broke up before my accident, yet you came to my house. Why?”

He walked to the door and opened it for her. “I think it is best if you focus on your work from now on,” he said. “And stay away from my wife’s office.”
