The door opened quietly. And the doctor stepped in with a nurse beside him, both of them speaking in low voices as they entered. They had expected to find the same stillness that had defined the room for days.
Instead, they stopped.
Cassienne was seated close to the bed, her hand still holding Dreston’s. Her face was wet with tears, but she was smiling through them, her eyes fixed on him as though she was afraid to look away.
Dreston was awake.
For a brief second, the doctor said nothing. The surprise was clear in his eyes, even though he tried to maintain his professional composure.
Cassienne turned toward him, her voice soft but filled with certainty. “Doctor… he is back.”
The doctor stepped forward immediately, his attention shifting fully into focus. “Mr. Tremont,” he said, moving closer to the bed. “Can you hear me clearly?”
“Yes,” Dreston replied. His voice was steady, though still slightly rough.
The doctor nodded once, already assessing him. “Good. I am going to run a quick examination. We need to be sure everything is stable.”
Cassienne slowly released Dreston’s hand, though her fingers lingered for a second longer before she let go completely. She stepped aside, giving the doctor space, but she did not move far. Her eyes remained on Dreston, watching every movement, every reaction.
The nurse moved efficiently, adjusting the equipment as the doctor began.
“Let us start with your vitals,” the doctor said.
He reached for Dreston’s wrist and checked his pulse, his fingers pressing lightly against the radial artery. His eyes moved briefly to the monitor, confirming the reading.
“Pulse is regular,” he murmured.
The nurse wrapped the blood pressure cuff around Dreston’s arm, securing it in place. The machine hummed softly as it inflated, tightening briefly before releasing.
The doctor watched the reading carefully. “Blood pressure is within normal range,” he said. He leaned slightly closer, his gaze shifting to Dreston’s eyes. “Follow my finger,” he instructed.
Dreston did.
The doctor moved his hand slowly from side to side, observing pupil response and tracking. He nodded faintly, satisfied. “Pupils are reactive. No sign of neurological lag.”
The nurse checked the monitor again, noting the steady rhythm of his heart rate and oxygen saturation.

“Heart rate is stable,” she added. “Oxygen levels are good.”
The doctor reached for the thermometer and took a quick reading. “Temperature is normal.”
He straightened slightly, studying Dreston with a more focused expression now. “Now I need to ask you
a few questions,” he said. “Answer them as clearly as you can.”
Dreston gave a small nod.
“What is your full name?”
“Dreston Tremont.”
“Do you know where you are?”
“In the hospital. Southvale.”
“What is the last thing you remember before you came here?”
Dreston paused briefly, but there was no confusion in his expression.
“The accident,” he said. “After I left Tina’s parents‘ house.”
Cassienne’s breath caught slightly, but she did not interrupt.
The doctor continued. “What do you remember before that?”
Dreston’s gaze shifted briefly toward Cassienne before returning to the doctor.
“Everything,” he said calmly. “The divorce. The time after. Cassienne coming back to Auralink. The vineyard. The lab. Our relationship… everything that happened between us.”
The room went quiet. The doctor watched him closely, as if searching for any sign of strain or inconsistency. “And after the accident?” he asked.
Dreston exhaled slowly.
“I remember the flashes,” he said. “The headaches. The confusion. I remember not being able to connect everything properly. But now… it is clear.”
Cassienne pressed her lips together, her eyes filling with tears again. She did not try to stop them this time. They fell freely, but her expression held something different now.
Relief.
The doctor remained silent for a moment, processing everything he had just heard.
Then he nodded. “That is very good,” he said.
He turned briefly to the nurse, who confirmed the readings once more before stepping back.
The doctor looked at Dreston again, his tone softer now. “Mr. Tremont, your vitals are stable, your
