Chapter Three Hundred And Twelve: I Can Tell You The Truth

That question hit harder than Cassienne expected. Because suddenly, she realized Helena was right She remembered the grief. The sickness afterward, and the endless hospital visits during that period of her childhood.
But the details surrounding Ethan Rhodes‘ death itself? They felt strangely blurred.
Broken.
Almost buried.
“I can tell you the truth,” Helena said quietly. “But not over the phone. When you’re ready to hear everything, come home.”
The line disconnected shortly afterward.
Cassienne remained standing there for several long seconds, staring blankly at the dark screen of her phone.
Her heartbeat had slowed strangely. Not from calmness. But from shock. Fragments of memory suddenly moved through her mind without warning.
Bright hospital lights. How her mother cried. And how someone carried her.
Voices speaking too loudly around her. The pain. Then nothing.
A sharp voice suddenly pulled her back. “Cassienne?”
She blinked immediately.
One of her assistants stood nearby holding a stack of reports while studying her carefully. “Are you
okay?”
Cassienne looked at her for a moment before straightening fully again. “Yes,” she answered smoothly
I’m fine.”
The assistant still looked uncertain. “You looked distracted.”
Cassienne gave a faint shake of her head and returned toward the development floor again. “We still have work to do.”
And just like that, she stepped back into professional mode. But internally, nothing felt stable anymore. About twenty minutes later, Jeff Sandler arrived at the lab accompanied by two executives from his media division. The moment he walked onto the development floor, several employees immediately straightened.
Jeff smiled the moment he saw the active synchronization displays. “So the rumors are true.”

Cassienne turned toward him. “Depends which rumors you heard.”
“That Nerox Technology is about to change the gaming industry forever.”
A few nearby engineers exchanged excited looks.

Jeff walked closer to the projection screens and studied the immersive interface output himself. “Do you realize what this means?” he asked. “The industry has spent years chasing realism through graphics alone. But this…” He looked back at her. “This makes digital interaction feel human.”
Cassienne folded her arms lightly. “That’s the goal.”
Jeff nodded slowly, clearly impressed. “When this launches, gaming stops being passive entertainment. People won’t just play anymore. They’ll experience it.”
One of the executives beside him added, “The market value alone will explode.”
Jeff laughed softly. “Forget the market value. This changes everything.”
For the first time since Helena’s call, Cassienne managed a genuine smile. Not because her mind was calm. But because this part of her life still made sense.
Technology made sense. Logic made sense. But people did not.
The meeting with Jeff continued for nearly another hour before the development floor slowly settled again. By evening, most of the engineers had moved toward the testing labs while Cassienne finally stepped into one of the quiet private offices overlooking the city.
She closed the glass door behind her and sat down slowly. Only then did the silence fully return.
And unfortunately, so did Helena’s words.
‘You don’t even remember properly how your father died.’
Cassienne leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes briefly.
Was that true? Or was Helena simply trying to manipulate her?
She didn’t know anymore.
Her phone vibrated again before she could think further. This time, her expression softened immediately
Dreston.
She answered almost instantly. “DT.”
The sound of his voice alone eased something inside her. “How’s my wife?”
Cassienne smiled faintly despite herself. “Working too hard.”
“I expected that answer.”
“And you?” she asked quietly.
