Three Hundred And Thirteen: Dangerous Activity
By the time most of the employees left Nerox Technology that evening, the atmosphere inside the building had finally grown silent. The constant movement across the development floor slowed gradually until only a few late–night engineers and system analysts remained behind.
Beyond the glass walls of the upper levels, the city lights of Southvale stretched endlessly into the distance, glowing beneath the darkening sky.
Inside her private office, Cassienne Rhodes remained seated behind her desk, though her attention had long drifted away from the reports spread before her.
Her conversation with Dreston Tremont still lingered heavily inside her mind.
Harold Ackley knows something.
The words refused to leave her thoughts.
Cassienne leaned back slowly in her chair and stared through the floor–to–ceiling glass walls
surrounding her office. The city outside looked calm from up here. Peaceful. Yet her life had never felt more uncertain than it did now.
Everything seemed connected somehow.
Her father’s death, the old lab. Tina’s fear before the accident. And the attacks. Also is the hidden enemy. And now her aunt’s warning.
A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts before the glass office door slid open carefully. One of her assistants stepped inside holding a tablet close to her chest.
“Mrs. Tremont?” she called softly.
Cassienne immediately looked up.
The title still affected her sometimes. Not because she disliked it. But hearing it reminded her that despite everything happening around them, she and Dreston truly belonged to each other now
“Sorry to disturb you,” the assistant continued. “The simulation team is waiting for your final approval before shutting down tonight’s test sequence.”
Cassienne blinked once and forced herself fully back into the present “Right Send the report to my
screen.”
The assistant nodded quickly and stepped farther inside “Also the staff prepared dinner for you in the executive lounge.”
Cassienne smiled faintly. “Thank you.
The young woman hesitated briefly afterward before speaking again. “You’ve been working nonstop since morning. Please don’t forget to rest.”

That made Cassienne’s expression soften slightly. “Now all of you are starting to sound like my husband.”
The assistant laughed quietly. “Mr. Tremont might have a point.”
Cassienne shook her head faintly while the assistant finally excused herself and left the office.
Silence returned again afterward.

Cassienne exhaled slowly and rose from her chair before walking toward the glass wall overlooking the city.
For several moments, she simply stood there thinking.
The more she replayed Helena’s words, the more unsettled she became. Not because she suddenly believed Dreston or his family were guilty of something terrible. No. Deep inside, she knew Dreston was just as innocent as she was.
Whatever happened all those years ago belonged to another generation.
The elderly, their secrets, their mistakes, their silence.
Dreston was not the man responsible for Ethan Rhodes‘ death. Just like she was not responsible for the chaos surrounding Tina now.
They were both simply trapped inside a story that started long before either of them understood what was happening.
And somehow, that realization hurt even more.
Because now she understood why Dreston looked so exhausted lately.
He was fighting enemies he could not even see while trying desperately to protect everyone around him.
Especially her.
Cassienne lowered her eyes briefly and rested one hand gently against her stomach.
Her family.
That was what mattered now. Not revenge. Not old bitterness. Not the endless hatred the older generation seemed unable to let go of.
Cassienne only wanted peace.
She wanted her child to grow up in a home filled with love instead of fear. And she wanted Dreston beside her when that happened.
The sound of approaching footsteps outside the office pulled her from her thoughts again. A few seconds later, the door opened once more, and this time, Jeff Sandler stepped inside carrying two cups of coffee.
