When Love Finds Its Way Back (Cassienne and Dreston) novel Chapter 333

Chapter Three Hundred And Thirty-Three: She Was Not Standing Alone

Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere changed completely after Dreston and Cassienne arrived. It was not only because of their status. Dreston Tremont had always carried power with him wherever he went, and Cassienne Rhodes had already become one of the most admired women in the technology world.

But tonight, something was different. They were not separated by rumors anymore. They were not standing on opposite sides of public misunderstanding. They entered together, hand in hand, and the entire room understood what that meant.

For a few minutes, almost everyone wanted to greet them.

Executives moved forward with polite smiles. Investors offered congratulations. Some of the older guests who had once kept a careful distance from Cassienne now greeted her with almost exaggerated warmth.

Cassienne noticed it all. She noticed the caution in their eyes too. Some of them were embarrassed. Some were curious. Some wanted to correct their earlier judgment without actually saying they had been wrong.

Dreston noticed everything as well.

He remained beside her, calm and composed, one hand resting lightly behind her back as they moved through the crowd. It was not possessive in a way that trapped her. It was steady. Protective. A quiet reminder that she was not standing alone tonight.

One elderly investor smiled as he shook Dreston’s hand before turning toward Cassienne. “Mrs. Tremont, congratulations. I must say, your work with Nerox Technology has been all anyone in my boardroom can talk about this week.”

Cassienne smiled with practiced grace. “Thank you. The team deserves most of the credit.”

Dreston looked at her with faint amusement.

But she ignored him.

The investor laughed. “Modesty too. That is rare these days.

After he left, Dreston leaned slightly closer. “The team deserves most of the credit?”

Cassienne took a glass of sparkling water from a passing server. “They do.”

“You built the foundation.”

“They refined the work.”

“You are impossible.”

Cassienne finally glanced at him. “And you’re biased.”

“Proud,” he corrected quietly.

The word landed softly between them. Cassienne looked away before her smile became too obvious.

Across the ballroom, Corren Thornwyck watched the exchange with quiet satisfaction. Beside him, Aurora Stephen followed his gaze and immediately understood who he was looking at. “They look happy,” Aurora said softly.

Corren nodded. “They are.”

There was no bitterness in his voice, and that relieved her more than she expected. She had known Corren respected Cassienne’s marriage, but seeing the truth in him now was different. His attention toward Cassienne held affection, yes, but not longing. It was the affection of someone who had chosen peace over desire.

Aurora looked at him carefully. “Does it hurt?”

Corren turned to her. “What?”

“Seeing them like that.”

For a moment, Corren did not answer immediately. Then he smiled faintly and looked back toward Dreston and Cassienne. “No. Not anymore.”

Aurora believed him. That answer touched her quietly.

Before she could say anything else, Merrick Ashbourne appeared beside them, holding two glasses of champagne and looking far too pleased with himself. “I leave you alone for two minutes and you start looking emotional,” Merrick said.

Corren accepted one glass from him. “You are a problem.”

“I am the CTO and co-owner of Coral Reach Systems. I am allowed to be a problem.”

Aurora smiled.

Merrick turned to her and gave a small respectful nod. “Aurora, you look beautiful tonight.”

“Thank you, Merrick.”

Corren looked at him suspiciously. “Why do you sound polite?”

“Because I have manners.”

“You broke into my office yesterday.”

“That was brotherly concern.”

Aurora laughed softly. “I’m beginning to understand why you two work well together.”

“We don’t,” Corren said.

“We do,” Merrick corrected. “He just likes pretending he does everything alone.”

Corren shook his head but did not argue further.

Near the other side of the ballroom, Ray Simpson stood with two senior medical executives from Lisbourn, barely listening to their conversation. He had entered the gala intending to remain calm, professional, and detached. That had been the plan.

Then Daisy walked into the room beside Kael Noah.

And the plan died immediately.

Ray saw them before Daisy saw him.

Kael stood tall and composed beside her, one hand lightly guiding her through the crowd in the familiar way of someone who knew her well. Daisy looked effortlessly stunning, smiling politely as Kael introduced her to an older businessman near the center of the hall.

To anyone else, they looked close. Maybe too close.

To Ray, it was another confirmation of what he had already forced himself to accept.

She had moved on.

His fingers tightened around the glass in his hand before he realized it.

One of the executives beside him was still speaking. “Dr. Simpson, your father’s expansion model for the neurological wing is impressive. I believe several partners would be interested in collaborating if the Simpson family is open to-‘

“Excuse me,” Ray interrupted calmly.

The man paused. “Of course.”

Ray stepped away before anyone could question him further.

Across the room, Daisy was doing a very poor job of pretending she was fine.

The moment she entered the ballroom, her eyes had searched for Ray.

She hated herself for it.
