Looking confident.
The kind of man who attracted attention without making any effort to do so.
His dark suit fit perfectly. His expression carried its usual calm confidence.
And unfortunately, he looked very pleased to see her. Daisy’s stomach dropped. Not because she disliked Lucien. Quite the opposite. And that was the problem. Lucien was a good man. A genuinely good man. And that somehow made everything worse.
“Lucien.”
A warm smile appeared on his face. “I was beginning to think you weren’t coming.”
Daisy laughed softly. “I was invited.”
“So was half the country.”
That made her smile.
Lucien moved naturally into the conversation, as if he had every right to stand beside her. Which, from the
spective of both families, he probably did.

parents practically adored him.
d everyone knew it.
How have you been?” Lucien asked.
Daisy looked away briefly. The truthful answer was complicated.
Instead she gave the easy one. “Busy.”
Lucien studied her for a moment. He clearly knew she wasn’t telling the whole truth, but he didn’t push. That was another thing she liked about him.
He never pushed.
As they continued talking, Lucien gradually noticed something. Daisy wasn’t entirely present. Every few moments, her eyes drifted somewhere. Almost unconsciously.

At first he ignored it. Then curiosity won. He followed her gaze and his eyes landed on Ray Simpson.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
The realization hit him almost immediately. So that was the problem. Lucien had heard rumors.
Whispers.
Half-finished conversations. He never paid much attention to them before. Now he wished he had,
When Daisy looked away again, Lucien made a quiet decision. Nothing dramatic and nothing possessive. But something just enough.
As another guest approached to greet them, Lucien placed a hand lightly at Daisy’s waist and guided her toward the conversation.
The movement was natural and polite. Almost unnoticeable to most people.
Unfortunately, Ray Simpson noticed everything. Across the ballroom, Ray froze. His eyes narrowed slightly.
The glass in his hand suddenly became far more interesting than the conversation he was supposed to be having.
Who was that man?
More importantly, why was he touching Daisy?
His jaw tightened.
This felt very different from Kael.
Kael looked safe. Like he owns her. But this man looked very much interested. And Ray hated that realization

on glanced toward Daisy and Lucien. Then back at Ray. “You absolutely were.”
ay said nothing.
That alone told Dreston everything.
The amusement in his eyes became impossible to hide. Before he could continue teasing him, Cassienne joined them.
“What’s happening?”
“Daisy.”
Ray immediately looked offended.
Now Dreston looked pleased. And Cassienne looked interested.

A dangerous combination.
“What about Daisy?” she asked.
Ray regretted standing there.
Dreston pointed casually toward the other side of the ballroom.
“Daisy’s boyfriend.”
Ray followed his gaze.
Lucien was still standing beside Daisy.
Cassienne looked. Then looked again. Then suddenly she laughed so hard.
Ray frowned. “What?”
Before Cassienne could answer, another voice joined them.
“I think I missed something.” Kael Noah approached the group.
Dreston greeted him immediately.
Unlike many executives, there was genuine respect between them. Both men had built successful companies.
Both understood the pressures that came with leadership. And both respected competence.
“Kael.”
“Dreston.
They shook hands.
Then Dreston gestured toward Ray. “Kael, meet Dr. Ray Simpson.”
The two men shook hands politely.
Then Dreston continued. “Ray, this is Kael Noah.”
Another nod, another handshake.
Then Dreston casually added: “Daisy’s brother.”
The world stopped. At least for Ray.
He blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Then stared at Kael. “What?”
Kael immediately understood. The expression on his face made it painfully obvious.
A slow smile appeared. Then a quiet laugh followed. “Oh.”
Cassienne immediately covered her mouth.

Dreston looked away. His shoulders were shaking. The traitor was laughing.
Ray pointed. “You are her brother?”
Kael nodded. “Very much so.”
