Chapter Three Hundred And Thirty-Six: I Protected You
The smile slowly disappeared from Kael’s face. For the first time that evening, genuine shock appeared in his eyes.
The ballroom continued buzzing around them. Music played softly in the background. Guests moved from one conversation to another. Laughter rose and fell from different corners of the room.
But for Kael Noah, everything seemed strangely distant. His attention remained fixed on Jessica Tremont.
Jessica watched the realization spread across his face slowly. Almost as if he was afraid to believe it
“You remember,” she said softly.
Kael let out a slow breath. “I remember.”
A faint smile appeared on Jessica’s lips. “Good.”
For several moments, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn’t uncomfortable. It was simply filled with years of questions and wondering, and of unfinished thoughts.
Finally, Kael laughed quietly. The sound surprised even him. “I spent years looking for you.”
Jessica blinked. “What?”
Kael shook his head, almost as if he still couldn’t believe she was standing in front of him. “I searched hospitals.”
Jessica’s eyes widened.
“I checked places you wouldn’t believe if I told you.”
The smile on her face disappeared.
“I hired private investigators.”
Now she was staring at him completely stunned.
Kael rubbed the back of his neck and laughed again. This time the laughter sounded almost embarrassed.
“When you say it out loud, it sounds ridiculous.”
“It is ridiculous.”
“I know.”
Jessica laughed. Then immediately stopped laughing because she realized he wasn’t joking. At least not entirely.
The realization touched her in a way she wasn’t expecting to.
She remembered that night very well and it was the first time she actually was bold enough to save someone’s life.
Back then she had simply done what anyone would do. At least it was what she told herself. Apparently Kael Noah disagreed.
“You really searched for me?” She asked because she still couldn’t believe he did. And for what reason.
Kael looked directly into her eyes. “Every year.”
The honesty in his voice caught her completely off guard. For a moment she didn’t know what to say. Fortunately, someone interrupted before the silence became too emotional.

One of Jessica’s teammates suddenly appeared beside her. “Jess.”
Jessica turned.
The
young man looked between her and Kael. Then immediately smiled. “Oh.”
Jessica narrowed her eyes. “Oh?”
The teammate nodded. “Now I understand.”
“You understand what?”
The man wisely took two steps backward. “I suddenly remembered that I have somewhere else to be.”
Then he disappeared into the crowd before Jessica could throw something at him.
Kael laughed.
Jessica groaned. “Ignore him.”
“I like him.”
“That’s because you’re not the one who has to work with him.”
The conversation became easier after that. It became natural and comfortable. Neither of them noticed how quickly the tension faded.
They simply talked about the gala and work. Also about life generally. This will be the first time in years that Kael felt strangely peaceful.
Across the ballroom, another conversation was taking place. One that was significantly less peaceful.
Corren Thornwyck and Aurora Stephen had barely managed to enjoy a quiet moment together before a group of influential guests approached them.
Aurora immediately knew what was coming. Lots of questions. And she wasn’t wrong.
“So when exactly did this begin?”
“How long have you been dating?”
“Who proposed first?”
“Did your family already know?”
Aurora smiled politely. Then immediately wished she could disappear.
Corren noticed her discomfort. He always seemed to notice.
One of the women turned toward Aurora. “You must have hidden him well.”
Aurora nearly choked. Before she could answer, Corren smoothly stepped into the conversation. “We’ve always preferred privacy.”
The woman nodded knowingly. “Ah.”
Another guest joined immediately. “So how long have you been together?”
Corren remained perfectly calm. “A while.”
