When Love Finds Its Way Back (Cassienne and Dreston) novel Chapter 340

Chapter Three Hundred And Forty. I’ll Get In Touch

Jessica Tremont stared at Daisy. Then she stared at Kael. Then back at Daisy again.

The noise inside the ballroom continued around them like nothing important had happened. Guests were still laughing pretty much, and glasses were still clinking. Music still floated beautifully across the hall while the elite of Southvale continued discussing business, partnerships, investments, and gossip with the same polished smiles they always wore.

But for Jessica, Kael, and Daisy, the air between them had changed completely.

Jessica’s smile had disappeared. It simply slipped away before she could stop it.

For a few seconds, she could not even decide which question to ask first. Everything that had felt strangely exciting only moments ago suddenly turned confusing.

Kael Noah was the man she had saved years ago, the same man who had searched for her, the same man who had looked at her tonight like he had finally found something precious.

And now Daisy had just said one sentence that changed the mood.

Jessica was Nora’s twin sister.

Kael’s expression had changed too. The shock in his eyes was no longer the same kind of wonder from a few minutes ago. This one was different and more complicated. He looked like a man who had taken one step toward something he wanted, only to realize there was a wall waiting in front of him.

Jessica finally found her voice. You know Nora?

The question came out softer than she intended.

Kael looked at her, then at Daisy. Daisy immediately looked away, and that alone told Jessica too much.

Silence settled between the three of them.

Jessica looked at Daisy again.

Daisy opened her mouth as if to explain, then closed it again.

That was enough.

Jessica slowly nodded as the pieces began arranging themselves in her mind. Nora had mentioned someone, and her mother

had been excited.

A man was supposed to come officially to meet the family. Jessica had not paid enough attention to it because she had been too busy with her career, her team, and her own strange sadness lately. But now, standing in front of Kael, everything connected in the worst possible way.

Oh,she said quietly.

Kael’s jaw tightened slightly

Jessica looked at him properly now Don’t tell me you’re the suitor my family is expecting

Daisy closed her eyes briefly.

For Jessica, that was confirmation enough

But Kael did not look away. That, more than anything, stopped Jessica from fully retreating into embarrassment.

He didn’t look panicked, nor did he lie. He didn’t pretend he did not understand the seriousness of what she had just realized.

Yes,he said calmly. I know Nora.

Jessica’s fingers tightened slightly around the stem of her glass.

Kael’s voice remained steady, she is a friend of mine. And I respect her a lot.

The answer he gave wasn’t romantic. But it was honorable.

Jessica heard that clearly.

He didn’t dismiss Nora because Jessica was standing in front of him now, nor did he make Nora small to make Jessica feel important. He also didn’t act like whatever existed between him and Nora meant nothing simply because he had found the girl from his past.

And strangely, that made the ache in Jessica’s chest worse. Because a coward would have been easier to walk away from. A reckless man would have been easier to dislike.

But Kael Noah was neither.

Daisy glanced between both of them and immediately realized she had no business standing there anymore. She had already dropped the truth like a bomb. Staying would only make everything worse.

I shouldDaisy pointed vaguely behind her. I think I saw Cassienne looking for me.

Jessica gave her a look that clearly said she did not believe her.

Daisy smiled weakly. Fine. I’m running away because this is awkward.

Kael gave her a tired look.

Daisy leaned closer to Jessica and whispered, I’m sorry.

Then she excused herself before either of them could stop her.

Once Daisy left, Jessica suddenly became painfully aware of the space between her and Kael. It was not a lot of space. Yet it felt

like too much and not enough at the same time.

Kael looked at her carefully. Jessica.

She smiled before he could say anything else. It was her usual bright, playful and easy smile. Except it did not reach her eyes. It’s fine, she said quickly. Really. This is justfunny.

Kael did not look convinced.

Jessica laughed softly and looked away. I mean, not funny funny. More like the universe has a very terrible sense of humor.

That was not true either. Nothing about this felt funny.

Not really

For one brief moment tonight, she had felt something she had not felt in a long time. Seen.

Not Jessica Tremont the pro player. Or as Dreston’s cousin, or as Nora’s twin. Not as the loud one, the triendly one, the one who always made people laugh.

Just Jessica

And now that moment had collided directly with Nora, her twin sister.

Kael seemed to understand at least part of what she was feeling, because his expression softened. I did not know,he said quietly.

Jessica looked back at him.

I didn’t know you were Nora’s sister.

She believed him. That was the problem. I know, she replied softly.

Kael opened his mouth to say more, but before he could, one of Jessica’s teammates called from across the ballroom.

Jess! We need you for the media photo. Sponsors are waiting.

Jessica turned toward the voice with visible relief and disappointment mixed together.

I should go.

Kael reacted before he could stop himself.

He reached out and gently caught her wrist.

Jessica froze.

The touch was not rough. It was not possessive. It was just urgent enough to stop her, and careful enough to remind her that he had no intention of forcing her to stay.

She looked down at his hand. Then up at him.

Kael slowly released her wrist, as though realizing how sudden the action had been. “Your phone,he said.

Jessica blinked. What?

Give me your phone.

Her brows lifted slightly. That sounds suspicious.
