Elsewhere inside the ballroom, Jeff Sandler was enjoying himself. Which surprised many people. The man was usually known for being serious. Focused. Professional. Tonight, however, he looked genuinely pleased, and the reason was currently standing
beside Dreston Tremont.
Cassienne.

The collaboration between Nerox Technology, Jeff’s company, had become one of the biggest talking points in the industry. Investors loved it. Analysts loved it. The market loved it. And Jeff wasn’t shy about saying so.
A group of executives stood nearby while Jeff raised his glass. “I want to officially say this.”
Cassienne immediately looked suspicious, but Jeff ignored her anyway.
“The best decision my company made this year was partnering with Cassienne.”
Several people laughed. But Cassienne groaned.
Jeff continued anyway. “She refuses to take credit for anything.”
“Because teams build companies,” Cassienne replied.
“Yes, yes. Very noble.”
More laughter followed. Then Jeff looked toward Dreston. “Honestly, I should thank you.”
Dreston raised an eyebrow. “For what?”
“For not being one of those husbands.”
“What husbands?”
“The insecure ones.

Cassienne nearly spit out her drink. Dreston looked amused.
Jeff continued. “You gave her room to build something extraordinary.”

For a moment, the surrounding group became quiet. Because beneath the humor was genuine respect.
Dreston glanced toward his wife. His expression softened immediately. Then he looked back at Jeff. “She’s Cassienne.”
The answer came naturally. Like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “The only thing I did was stay out of her way.” The group laughed again. But Cassienne felt warmth spread through her chest. Because she knew that wasn’t entirely true. Dreston had done far more than stay out of her way. He had protected her. He believed in her. He supported and loved her, even when she didn’t know how to love herself.
She quietly slipped her hand into his. Dreston looked down. Then smiled. No words were necessary.

Near another section of the ballroom, Jessica was laughing, actually laughing. Not the polite kind, but the genuine kind. And Kael Noah found himself enjoying every second of it.
“You hired investigators?” Jessica shook her head. “I still can’t believe that.”
Kael looked mildly embarrassed. “It sounds worse when you say it.”
“It sounds insane.”

“That’s fair.”
Jessica laughed again. The sound somehow made him smile. For years he had imagined meeting her again. He imagined dozens of scenarios. Some to be dramatic. While some may be emotional. And some may be ridiculous. None of them looked like this. None of them involved a beautiful woman laughing at him while holding a champagne glass. And somehow, this version felt better. Much better.
They continued talking. Neither noticed Daisy approaching until she was almost beside them.
Jessica immediately brightened. “Daisy!”
The two women hugged warmly and naturally. The kind of hug that only happened between genuine friends.
Kael watched the interaction with interest. Then Daisy noticed something. Actually, she noticed several things. First, Jessica was smiling far more than usual. Second, Kael looked happier than he had in years. Third- they were standing very close together.
Daisy narrowed her eyes immediately. “What is happening here?”
Jessica blinked. Kael looked away. Which told Daisy everything.
“Oh my God.”
“Datsy,” Jessica warned.
“Oh my God.”
Kael sighed. “Daisy.”
She pointed dramatically between them. “I leave both of you alone for one hour.”
“It hasn’t been one hour.”
“You found each other in one hour?”
Jessica laughed. Kael rubbed his forehead. Then finally decided there was no point hiding it. His gaze moved toward Jessica. A strange softness entered his expression. The kind Daisy had never seen before.
“She’s the girl.”
Silence took over. Complete silence.
Daisy froze. Jessica looked confused. “What girl?”
Daisy slowly turned toward her brother. Then toward Jessica. Then back toward Kael. The realization hither all at once. And now, her jaw dropped. “No.”
Kael nodded. “Yes.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Jessica looked between them, increasingly confused.
Finally Daisy managed to speak. “You’re serious?”
Kael nodded again.
