Chapter Three Hundred And Forty–Three: You Need To Believe Me
Jessica Tremont remained frozen inside the ladies‘ room long after the man and woman had left. For several long seconds she couldn’t move, couldn’t think, and could barely breathe properly.
The words continued replaying inside her head of an endless, horrifying loop
They planned to kidnap Cassienne. And Tina.
Tina died because of me.
Talk to the boss.
Each sentence felt worse than the one before it, sinking deeper like shards of ice into her chest.
Jessica slowly pushed open the stall door and stepped out. The elegant ladies‘ room suddenly felt much smaller than before, the walls closing in as her reflection in the mirror stared back at her – pale, wide–eyed, and stripped of all the evening’s earlier joy.
For the first time that night, she no longer cared about the gala. The excitement and happiness had vanished completely. Even thoughts of Kael disappeared from her mind. All she could think about was Cassienne. Cassienne was pregnant, and sortiebody wanted to take her.
Jessica quickly splashed cold water onto her face. The cool sensation helped a little, not much, but enough to steady her racing pulse. She took a deep breath, then another, forcing air into her lungs until the dizziness eased. Then she straightened her shoulders. Panicking would not help anybody. Cassienne needed information. Dreston needed information. And she was the only person who knew exactly what she had just overheard.
Jessica grabbed her purse and hurried out of the ladies‘ room. The moment she returned to the hallway, the distant sounds of the gala reached her again – music, laughter, conversation, all of it sounding so painfully normal.
That somehow made everything worse. Because hidden somewhere inside this very hotel were two people casually discussing kidnapping and murder as if they were talking about the weather.
Jessica entered the ballroom and immediately began searching for Cassienne. The crowd felt twice as large now, people moving everywhere–investors, business owners, executives, guests, servers, and security personnel. She scanned the room anxiously, heart hammering against her ribs. Then she finally found her.
Cassienne stood near one side of the ballroom, surrounded by several influential investors and company executives. Everyone seemed eager to speak with her after Jeff Sandler’s speech. Jessica felt a brief surge of relief, followed quickly by frustration. There were too many people around her. She couldn’t just walk into that conversation and announce that criminals were discussing kidnapping plots inside the hotel.
Cassienne was smiling politely while answering questions. One investor appeared to be discussing future expansion opportunities. Another seemed interested in Nerox’s latest technology. A third was practically monopolizing the conversation. Jessica took a step forward, then stopped. No. This wasn’t the right place. Not like this.
Her eyes immediately moved around the room again.
Three bodyguards.
– –
She spotted them almost immediately two near the crowd, one positioned farther away, watching with practiced professionalism.
The sight eased some of the fear inside her chest. At least Cassienne wasn’t alone. At least somebody was protecting her. Jessica released a slow breath. Then she made another decision. Dreston. She would tell Dreston. He would know what to do.
The moment that decision settled inside her mind, she turned and began searching for him instead. Across the ballroom, Kael Noah had been trying very hard not to look for Jessica. He failed completely, because his eyes found her almost immediately.
At first he smiled. Then the smile disappeared. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Jessica was moving through the ballroom

quickly. Het expression looked tense, distracted, worried. The happitress she had worn earlier was gone.
Kael frowned, his first instinct was to walk toward her, to ask what happened, to find out who had upset her. Then he noticed the direction she was moving. She was moving toward Dreston Fremont.
Kael paused. If she was looking for Dreston, then whatever was bothering her was probably tmportant. He decided not to interrupt. Still, his gaze followed her, and the uneasy feeling inside him refused to disappear.
Meanwhile, Dreston was standing with Corren Thornwyck, Merrick Ashbourne, and feff Sandler near one of the private networking areas. The four men had somehow ended up discussing everything except business, which usually happened whenever they gathered together.
“You know,” Merrick said, sipping his drink, “I think Jeff enjoyed that speech a little too much.”
Jeff looked offended. “I was being sincere.”
“You were showing off.”
“I was celebrating.”
“You were showing off.”
Cerren nodded. “He was definitely showing off.”
Jeff pointed at both of them. “I won an award.”
“You own the company.”
“Exactly.”
