Dreston did not sleep.
The doctors had tried everything they could to make him rest, but he remained awake, staring at the door and asking for updates about Cassienne every few minutes.
At first, the nurses answered him patiently.
Then they began looking at one another whenever he asked the same question again.
Dreston looked toward the clock.
Only a few minutes had passed since the last update.
It felt like an hour.
His body was weak, and the pain in his side became worse whenever he tried to move, but none of that mattered to him. Cassienne was somewhere in the same hospital, in pain, and he was lying there doing nothing.
His blood pressure had already risen twice.
The doctor warned him that if he did not calm down, they would give him something to help him sleep.
Dreston had looked at the man as though he had threatened his life.
“If you make me sleep while my wife is giving birth, I will make sure you never work in this hospital again.”
The doctor stared at him. “You do not own this hospital.”
“I will by tomorrow.”
Abigail covered her face with one hand. “Dreston.”
He looked at her. “What?”
“You cannot threaten every doctor who disagrees with you.”
“They are keeping me away from my wife.”
“They are keeping you alive.”
The doctor looked at Abigail.
She gave him an apologetic smile.
Her son had been unconscious for days. She had spent every hour praying for him to wake up.
Now that he was awake, she almost felt guilty for finding his behavior exhausting.
The door opened and Ray entered with another doctor behind him.
Dreston turned his head immediately. “Now that you are here. Can you take me to my wife now?”
Ray crossed his arms. “We have already discussed this.”
“Mr. Tremont.” The other doctor said, “moving you into the delivery room is risky. You have just regained consciousness after a serious injury and surgery.”
“I understand.”
The doctor looked at the monitor again.
Dreston’s blood pressure was still high.
Keeping him there was not calming him. If anything, the waiting was making his condition worse.
Ray understood it too.
He stepped closer to the doctor and lowered his voice. “We can move him with full monitoring.”
The doctor frowned. “Ray.”
“He will not rest here.”
“That does not mean we should reward his behavior.”
“I am not rewarding anything. I am trying to stop him from pulling out his lines and attempting to walk there.”
Dreston looked at them. “I can hear you.”
Ray turned toward him. “Good. Then hear this clearly. You are not allowed to move from the bed.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“You are not allowed to sit up.”
“That’s fine with me.”
“You are not allowed to interfere with the delivery team.”
Dreston’s expression changed. “What does that mean?”
“It means you stay quiet unless Cassienne speaks to you.”
“But I am her husband.”
“And they are the medical professionals trying to deliver your baby safely.”
Dreston looked at the doctor. “Will I be beside her?”
“If the delivery team agrees.”
“I need a better answer.”
Ray looked ready to lose his patience. “We will speak to the obstetrician. If she approves, we will wheel your bed into the room and keep you under close observation.”
Dreston nodded. “Do that.”
The doctor gave him a warning look. “This is not because you ordered it.”
Abigail laughed softly.
The doctor walked out.
Ray remained behind. “If anything changes, they will bring you out immediately.”
“I am not leaving Cassienne.”
“You will if your condition becomes dangerous.”
Dreston stared at him.
Ray stared back.
Abigail placed a hand on Dreston’s arm. “Please, listen to them.”
He looked at his mother. Her eyes were still red from crying. “You have just come back to us,” she said quietly. “Do not make us afraid again.”
“Mr. Tremont,” she said through tears. “You are awake.”
Dreston looked at her and managed a weak smile. “I am.”
“Thank God.” She pressed one hand against her chest. “You frightened all of us.” Mrs. Rawlings wiped her face. “Mrs. Tremont has been asking for you.”
Dreston’s expression changed. “How is she?”
“In pain,” Daisy said. “And arguing with everyone.”
Dreston almost smiled. “She is fine, then.”
Jessica laughed. “She said the same thing about you.”
Aurora stepped closer. “It is good to see you awake.”
Corren nodded, looking at Dreston with amusement.
Dreston looked back at him and he silently thanked him. For now, he only nodded. “Thank you.”
The delivery room doors opened.
A nurse stepped out. “We are ready for him.”
Abigail looked at Dreston. “I will wait outside.”
He reached for her hand. “Mom.”
She leaned closer.
“Thank you for being here.”
Her eyes filled with tears again. “I would never be anywhere else.”
She kissed his forehead and stepped back. The nurses wheeled Dreston inside.
Cassienne was in the middle of another contraction.
Her eyes were closed, and sweat covered her forehead. One hand gripped the side of the bed while the other held the nurse’s arm.
She cried out as the pain became stronger.
Dreston stared at her. For a moment, he forgot his own pain. He forgot the machines. He also forgot the doctors and nurses around them.
He only saw his wife who looked tired, and afraid. “Cassienne.”
His voice was weak, but she heard him.
Her eyes opened. She turned her head slowly. The moment she saw him, everything inside her seemed to stop. “Dreston?”
He smiled. His face was pale, and his eyes still showed how weak he was. But he was awake, and looking at her.
Cassienne began to cry. “You’re awake.”
“I told you I would come back.”
“You didn’t tell me anything.” Her voice broke. “You just lay there.”
Dreston’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.”
