Cassienne woke slowly. For a few seconds, she couldn't remember where she was.
Her body felt heavy, and there was a deep tiredness in every part of her. The room was quiet except for the soft sounds of the hospital machines and the faint movement of someone breathing nearby.
Suddenly there was a soft cry beside her. It was a gentle, broken cry.
Cassienne opened her eyes fully. The bassinet stood beside her bed. And in it was her daughter.
The memory finally returned.
Dreston waking up, the labour, the pain, Dreston's hand in hers, the baby's first cry. Their baby girl.
Cassienne stared at the bassinet, and her eyes immediately filled with tears.
She turned her head gently and saw Dreston was lying in another hospital bed on the opposite side of the bassinet.
The doctors didn't allow him to remain in the delivery room for too long after the baby was born. His blood pressure was too high, and the pain in his side became worse.
But he refused to return to the intensive care unit without Cassienne.
After a long discussion, the medical team decided to move both of them into a large private recovery suite with separate beds. Dreston was still connected to monitors, and a nurse stayed nearby throughout the night.
Right now, he was sleeping.nHis face still looked pale. The happiness from the delivery room did not take away the signs of what he had suffered.
There were shadows beneath his eyes. His lips looked dry, and his breathing was slow.
Cassienne watched him for several seconds. Her heart tightened.
But she was happy he was alive. That truth still felt too large to understand.
Only one day earlier, she was surrounded by people who loved her and wondered if she would ever hear his voice again.
But now he was lying only a few feet away.
Her husband. The father of her child.
She lifted one hand to wipe the tears from her face.
The baby made another soft sound.
Cassienne slowly pushed herself higher against the pillows. Pain moved through her body, and she stopped for a moment.
A nurse who had been sitting quietly near the door immediately stood. “Mrs. Tremont?”
Cassienne looked at her. “I’m alright.”
“Do you need help?”
“I want to hold my baby.”
The nurse smiled. “Of course.”
She walked to the bassinet and carefully lifted the baby. Cassienne watched every movement. Her daughter looked so small in the nurse’s arms.
She was wrapped in a soft white blanket, with only her tiny face visible. The nurse placed her gently against Cassienne’s chest.
Cassienne’s arms closed around her. The baby moved slightly and made another quiet sound. “I’m here,” Cassienne whispered.
Her voice broke. “I’m here, my love.”
The baby settled almost immediately. Cassienne looked down at her. She still could not believe she had carried this little person inside her for months.
