Chapter Fifty–Six: Is Your Offer Still Available?
Nate stood in front of Corren’s desk, her hands clenched tightly by her sides. Her eyes burned with anger, with humiliation, and desperation.
“Corren, you can’t do this to me,” she said, her voice shaking. “That office was supposed to be mine. Everyone knows it. Yet you gave it to her without any competition.”
Corren slowly raised his head and looked at her.
For a moment, he said nothing.
He tried to understand her. Was she truly confident enough to challenge Cassienne? Or was she simply blind with jealousy and pride?
Before Corren could reply, Merrick leaned forward in his seat, his tone harsh.
“Nate,” Merrick said coldly, “are you saying Cassienne does not deserve that office?”
Nate inhaled deeply, as if preparing herself for battle.
“All I am saying,” she replied, “is that I deserve a fair chance. I am qualified. I worked for this company for years. Yet she walked in and got the office without any test.
She straightened her shoulders.
“If you test us–test everything that qualifies someone for that position–and she wins, then I will accept defeat and resign. But if I win, I will take the office. It is that simple.”
Merrick stared at her for a long moment.
Then he laughed.
A slow, mocking laugh.
“You are insane, Nate,” he said. “It seems you truly do not know that woman.”
Florence had been silent all this while, sitting comfortably with her legs crossed. She had listened carefully to every word.
And deep inside, she smiled. This was interesting. She also wanted that office.
“Well,” Florence said calmly, breaking her silence, “I think it is fair if she wants to compete. There is no crime in trying.”
Nate turned to her, surprised.
She didn’t like Florence, but right now, she needed allies.
“This is madness,” Corren said firmly. “I don’t agree to this.”
Merrick nodded in agreement. “Cassienne will never accept this. We appointed her based on her ability. This is unnecessary.” 1
Corren leaned back in his chair.
“I agree,” he said finally. “Not because I doubt Cassienne. I know what she can do. But because I want to prove something.”

Merrick frowned deeply.
“That’s ridiculous,” he snapped. “This is unprofessional. Cassienne will hate you for this.”
Corren met his eyes calmly. “I know exactly what I am doing, Merrick. Trust me.‘
Florence stood up.
“In that case,” she said smoothly, “I am joining the competition too. I am also qualified.”
Merrick laughed darkly.
“What is this? A circus?” he said as he stood. “I’m out of here.”
He walked toward the door, then stopped.
“But remember this,” he added. “If Cassienne leaves this company, you lose her to Auralink. Her ex–husband will double our offer the moment she walks out.”
And with that, he stormed out.
Cassienne was furious.
She stood in her office, her eyes blazing, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
“You can’t be serious,” she snapped.
“Cassienne, please–this is not what you think,” Corren tried to explain.
“Oh, I will tell you exactly what I think,” she cut in sharply.
Her voice trembled with rage.
“You don’t trust me with this position. You never did. You gave me that office not because I earned it, but because you thought I would sleep with you.”
Corren froze.
“You knew about my past. You knew about my marriage. And you decided to use it to your advantage.”
She laughed bitterly.
“You thought I would spread my legs for you afterward. But I’m sorry to disappoint you–I am not that kind of
woman.”
“That is not fair!” Corren snapped.
He ran a hand through his hair, pacing the room.
“You just accused me of something I never did.”
He stopped and faced her.
“Fine. Maybe I like you. But I never looked at you the way you just described.”
Cassienne scoffed.
“I didn’t follow the usual process,” Corren admitted. “Because I know you are a genius. That is why I gave you

that office. I don’t mix work with pleasure.”
Then he said the words that shocked her.
“I love you, Cassienne.”
She froze.
“But I also know you love only one man,” he continued. “What I want with you is not just sex. I want the full package.”
Cassienne laughed harshly.
“Well, fuck you and your full package,” she spat. “Because you just made me look like a fool by listening to that toxic woman.”
The door opened immediately and Dreston stood by the door. Eyes narrowing.
Cassienne turned sharply, there stood Dreston. Her eyes widened in shock. Then Dreston walked inside, hands in his pants pockets.
Cassienne thought of all times, and of all moments–why now? Why did Dreston choose a day like this to visit?
Dreston didn’t look at her first.
His eyes were on Corren. And he didn’t like the fact that he was alone with Cassienne.
As for Corren, bitterness filled his chest. Why would Cassienne bring her ex–husband here?
“What is he doing here?” Corren snapped.
Cassienne lifted a brow slowly.
“Excuse me?” she said coldly. Corren had no right to ask her that question.
Dreston ignored him and turned to Cassienne. “We need to talk,” he said quietly.
